Apple and Microsoft are trying to "Gaslight" me
« on: February 08, 2019, 05:03:20 pm »
I tried to burn a (CD) playlist from iTunes on my newish PC. It errored with code "0xC0AA0301".
I tried to burn directly from Windows 10 an audio CD: this time, a general error.

Though I can play CDs, I've never actually burned one on this machine. I ran all hardware diagnostics on the drive and all were passed.

I've fallen between two stools as I need a solution to a Microsoft problem that renders me able to create an Apple solution!

I've looked everywhere and can find nothing that works.  :horse:

Any ideas please?
You can release yourself but the only way to go is down!

Just starting with the simple stuff, are you sure you actually have a DVD-RW drive and that its capable of writing onto CD-R?

Sounds like something has installed a broken filter driver. Try reinstalling iTunes and any CD/DVD burning software you have.

I'm not sure how this counts as gaslighting though?

before you start messing with installing and uninstalling software Etc,
confirm that you actually have a drive capable of burning a CD.

Open device manager and make sure that you see a CD or dvd burner under the drive section.

If you're using Windows 10, right click the start button and then click device manager.

On Windows, I use Imgburn. It's been working fine for me for years. However, I'm using an old version that I've copied from one pc to another, so I haven't "installed" it in a while. It may be bundled with crapware/advertising/whatever now. And even though it isn't installed, it still saves settings and such to the Registry..

Getting your software from a third party is always a great policy for reducing potential malware.  :bullshit:

Ninite is a package management system for Windows. Why one would specifically chose to download their programs like this on Windows is beyond me. Yes that's an accepted practice on Linux, but a unified file system and command interpreter integration makes that a bit more useful, on top of the fact that most repos are hosted by the same people who host the individual distros. Even still, adding more relays, scripts, and other bullshit into the mix doesn't make for better security, if anything that adds more things to go wrong.

Don't give people strange links to what is effectively an aggregate download site (or at least takes the appearance of one), since those have been time and time again perfect breeding grounds for crap, and I would not blame anyone for throwing you out with your links. The safest policy is to ALWAYS get your software (especially on Windows) from the source, and not from any third party mirrors, install scripts, package managers, whatever, and to hash check your downloads if you're concerned. Windows already has a package management system and doesn't need another one.

Yes, that's an alternative too.
But, who the heck claims, that this is bundled with malware??
In such an undifferentiated claim the malware mostly sits in front of the monitor.  ;)

The CDBurnerXP FAQ says they bundle OpenCandy. However, it looks like the FAQ is out of date and they bundle installCore now which is also classified as adware. You need to go to the download page and select "More download options" to find the clean download. All of the other download links have it bundled.

Q: Does CDBurnerXP contain any spyware or other restrictions?
A: The default setup of CDBurnerXP includes OpenCandy (a component which displays a single advertisement during setup, allowing you to install additional optional software). Other than that it does not contain any adware nor spyware nor any other restrictions. It is absolutely free, for personal and commercial use alike. If necessary, you can even download a version without OpenCandy from the download page.

Oh, please, stop teaching other people what would be right or wrong in your principle!
I know apt update/upgrade just as well as you.

This was about a tip, and about the claim that the original software would spread malware.

I also know problems with software from undefined sources and fight it myself. I have used ninite in the free version several hundred times and more, and never had a problem with it. And if I recommend this, then it already has its harmless reason! So get off of silly counterstatements again, please!

I told:
Get this with ninite!
What's so hard about that to understand?
If this is actually contained in the original, ninite filters it out!

Edit: But despite everything, thanks for the hint.

Another hint:

On the original website is a version without InstallCore (see more downloads). This version should be clean.

This burning app is one of "must-have" vor win, if you want to burn CD's/DVD's.

-- and please, after download, before install, maybe unzip it, and use Malwarebytes (-free) to check it.
-- Win10: use/activate Defender!

Edit: I still think that the OP needs to check their hardware and make sure it actually is capable of burning discs before proceeding with any software. /Edit

I can definitely see the argument against ninite, you don't necessarily know exactly what it's doing, and have to trust that it's not malicious.

However having used in the past I do like it and trust it at least as much as the original installers for the programs.

It's actually better in some regards, a lot of those free programs like CDburner, have adware Etc that you have to be very careful to uncheck while you're going through the install process. Ninite does not have that, it already stripped those out.

Cheers all.

Device Manager lists it as: PLDS DVD+-RW DU-8A5LH which "Google" assures me is capable of writing. Indeed, during the Dell diagnostics it did a write test which was passed, apparently!  ???

(I did notice though that Device Manager says: "Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives" and "ROM" implies that it can't write!?)

I don't have any burning software as I had assumed I could do it in Windows … somewhere or in iTunes. Initially, I thought it was an iTunes problem but neither Windows Media nor "File Explorer" can write either so it must be my machine. Hardware seems to check out so, it must be software.

I was initially trying to make an audio CD (very 1980s) but now realise that I can't write anything. Yes, "Gaslighting" is a bit strong but I get paranoid when there are two parties involved in a problem (as I initially thought) like when the builder blames the electrician and the electrician blames the builder!
You can release yourself but the only way to go is down!

Do you have the files in WAV format residing on your computer?

I am still with Win XP Pro SP3 and have not burnt a CD in like, forever, but if I ever needed to I still have Nero and it works flawlessly every time.  Seeing that both the HW and software are over 10 years old I have no doubt that anything more recent can burn CDs.

Let us know exactly what steps you are doing and what happens.
All my posts are made with 100% recycled electrons and bare traces of grey matter.

Windows Media Player is also able to rip original music-cd's, and burn mp3 and others back to music-cd's.

Maybe you have a optical defective writer, or used before mediums. Mostly you can't use cd/dvd's from a previous burn attempt for instance win filexplorer itself, which also try to burn, but do nothing more as destroy the cd. So, use a fresh one.

To have firstly a success experience, try to rip a original music-cd.
Set win media-player like on the pictures (excuse german menus). After that, close wmp and start it again. With open wmp, only insert the original cd. Wmp should instantly begin to rip every track from the original cd to mp3 in directory music. Then you know, your writer is working.

After that, try to burn them back from inside wmp.
