As Mr. Burns might say, "Well done, Simpson."

This early Apollo computers are one example of necessity as the mother of invention. Now if we can only invent a way to clean up Fukushima and Chernobyl once and for all.

The thing everybody forgets is that doom is very demanding to even 120mhz 486 CPUs.

So in short, no way in hell is that enough for doom.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

That's one crappy video on the subject.  I could have read wikipedia, and had more insight into it then that.   |O

The "Moon Machines" one episode about the navigation computer. Moon Machines is a six part mini series made by Science Channel, where the people who worked on the various parts of the Apollo program are featured. It's a very good series and there are low res versions on available YouTube.

I saw that video and its not too bad as a quick introduction.
but its
2K WORDS of RAM and 36K WORDS of ROM.

A word in this case is 15 bits.

so roughly, but not quite, translates to 4K RAM and 72K ROM

I seem to recall they navigated using ground computers via telemetry and only used the on-board AGC for checking the navigation (it was ok). The landings however used the AGC for things like ground radar (which was the cause of the now famous 1202 alarm because the radar was turned on too early and overloaded the AGC CPU).

It should be easier to get there now with i7 powered Windows and Mac machines handling all the math
(or Linux if you want a smoother ride and fair chance to return intact)

If it's not worth going there because no gold or silver deposits to jack, how about golf tours for old billionaires with walking disabilities?  :-+

They'll pay the big bucks for such a gravity free golf experience,  8)

and if the mission runs into problems, well, hey, the old greedy ****s  had one foot in the grave anyway...   >:D
