EEVblog search engine - missing threads?
« on: August 04, 2017, 11:08:33 pm »
I did EEVblog search for "DS3231" and it doesn't find this post  |O
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/microscope-images-of-a-ds3231/

Tried advanced, search titles etc.  Had to rely on my noggin.
Other people having this problem? Is there something wrong with the space-time continuum here?

I think many people (me included) just ignore the forum search and use some other search engine like DuckDuckGo or Google and search for site:eevblog.com ds3231.

Yep, but if you use the search between "Help" and "Profile", DS3231 finds 2 pages worth of threads.
.  That took much longer than I thought it would.

It does, but not the particular link that floobydust posted. Maybe it only updates once a week or so?

You're right, no wonder we can't find anything here.

Then I tried putting "site:eevblog.com fuse bm235" into google and it was the second result.
My first attempt was with Duckduckgo but it did not return the result I wanted.
You don't need to use Google directly.
If Duckduckgo doesn't give the wanted result just add !g to the search string, "site:eevblog.com fuse bm235 !g"  and let DDG search Google for you.

I also wondered because the "show new replies to your posts" doesn't show threads I'm involved with, it's not dependable either.
At least I know I'm not going crazy  :-DD

Having to support search engines myself in the past, I can tell you this is extremely difficult to get 100% right, especially whem there is explosive growth. In the end, I joined the crowd that leaves this with the folks that make money with it and have the structure to expand infrastructure and improve search algorithms continuously. It doesn't mean the internal search is useless, as it can search for certain parts of the forum (users, etc.) not crawled by google, but for regular posts it is harder to keep up.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Yes, if it comes to interpreting a complex search request to find related search terms (i.e. if you search for 'solder iron' but the search should also show up related terms like 'solder station'.).

There's however really nothing special or particular difficult in searching for keywords.

The search engine works fine if you start from the root of the forum. Before your search, click on the EEVblog Electronics Community Forum link and the search. I had no problem finding links to DS3231 directly from EEVblog forum.

There was no doubt about it showing results. But does it also show the link from the first post?

In my experience the issues even with simple searches were related to server capacity to address zillions of searches and the technology that had issues in keeping the integrity of the hash tables due to the quick expansion. However two factors were probably critical at the time: I was on a budget and the year was 2007-08 - Apache Lucerne was not yet easily available.

Also in my experience the simple search is very limited. The ability to search for similar terms is critical to overcome typos and, if available, the ability to do substring searches is very handy.
