One million RPM motor
« on: March 02, 2016, 11:25:52 am »

I found this youtube. It is in french but should be easy to  comprehend, of a guy who spins up magnets upto  1,000,000 rpm: https://youtu.be/RB7zzs9x5Og

Of course completely useless but I found it interesting. One of his little magnets grenades.

ETH Zurich claims a motor that actually can do effective work at this RPM, but I could find no video: http://www.livescience.com/3075-spin-record-set-1-million-rpm.html

You can buy motors with 1 megarpm and 100W: http://www.celeroton.com/en/products/motors.html  :o

I don't want to know the price though.... :-X
They have to cost an arm and a leg.

Greetings

100W at 1Mrpm, that's, what, a whopping 0.008 in*lbs ( 8 mil*lbs?) of torque?  I wonder what the power input requirement is to get 100W at the shaft.

Strange the standard configuration is with ballbearings and the magnetic bearings are offered only as an option. Didn't know ballbearings could run at such speeds either. They probably don't last very long.

There are model jet engines that run at 250K RPM, without the heat and hostile enfironment it doesn't sound that far-fetched that there are bearings that can take 1M RPM...

Would be cool to do it with a glass container under vacuum...

This looks like a high quality genuine product, but nowhere in the datasheet does it mention operation at 1e6 rpm?  The quoted operating figures are 500,000 rpm with 2 mNm torque @ 100W and 4mNm @ 200W with active cooling, still impressive.  Maybe marketing getting hold of the no load max speed or something.

Air turbine dentist drills routinely run at 100,000 or more when free running, but with almost no torque. The moment he bites into your tooth it spins down. The real trick is making a motor with grunt that doesn't dynamically disassemble itself.

It's only equivalent to 16.6666.... KHz.
Slow as, compared to things electronic.

Magnetic levitation bearings.

Most aren't aware a simple engine turbocharger runs to 150K rpm.

Ceramic ball bearings. Zirconium dioxide or aluminium oxide also used in dentist drills mentioned earlier.

That's impressive!  I like the cooling system too.
