Would Need some Help to Find and Choose my first Soldering-Station
« on: September 28, 2013, 01:57:42 pm »
Hi There Folks

I am getting really interested and motivated to start soldering, I found some days ago a project about how to create a Color calibration stuff for the tv. The trip is I would need first of all a Soldering station and I am really a beginner in this part of the world, so I come here to  beg for some help, I heard about the hakko 888D because the hakko 888 was discontinued, the thing is I live in Germany and I just can't find one, my budget is really really limited so I can't afford to much.

Thanks in advance peps

If you put a good quality tip on any cheap temp controlled soldering station it will work quite well. That will be the cheapest option.

So the real question is, what cheap soldering stations accept common tip sizes.

The Hakko 900M tips are a pretty standard size and quite often fit the cheap/clone soldering stations

hobbyking sell a $16 soldering station, i don't know what tips it uses though.
$16 is maybe a little too cheap, id be quite worried about electrical safety.

This one is very good, and SRA Solder is a class act. Just bought one of their power supply, and I'm very happy.

I can recommend Aoyue as well. The 9378 seems to be a clone of the Weller WD1. I own a 2738A+ since I wanted Hot-Air. If you want Hot-Air and desoldering buy the 2703A+.

Up to $ 100. The best choice would be a clone of Hakko-936. It should select a station by weight. The harder, the better. The main thing it will transformator. On should be good. Later, you can easily upgrade your station, buying this-  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Soldering-Iron-Station-Temperature-Controller-For-HAKKO-936-T12-T1-T13-Handle-/170969190905?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27ce8ed1f9. Selection will Lukey, Atten, Aouye. In this price category appropriate to propose such a thing: GOOT PX-201, Mini-Soldering Station Goot PX-601, Goot PX-501.           Excuse me for my english)

Try cicuit specialist, they have a good selection of soldering irons including ones that take Ayue tips, they can be found on Amazon and Ebay as well as direct from them.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Watt-soldering-station-controlled-solder/dp/B007VC2I6Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1380440434&sr=1-1&keywords=circuit+

http://www.circuitspecialists.eu/best-sellers/csi-station60w-60-watt-temp-controlled-soldering-iron-station

I would go direct rather than trough Amazon or ebay as it is cheaper for the same item that way. I got one of their irons 2 years ago and it is still going fine despite having seen a lot of work, the replacement tips they sell are marked Ayue as well.

They seem to be good quality tips I have been using the same tip for nearly a year now. But then I look after my soldering irons and their tips I have an Antex 25 watt iron that I purchased in 1994 that still has the same tip that it came with I also have 250 watt solon that I got in 1982 and that has the same bit both irons are used in an industrial workshop that makes and repairs generators and electric gates so get used heavily. I believe in look after your tools and your tools will look after you.

They both use the same tip style, which are clones of Hakko 900M tips. They slide over the heating element, and the tip holder (metal tube) slides over that and screws down to keep it in place.

If you're nervous about Aoyue or other clones, you'd be able to use genuine Hakko tips if you wish (I'd suggest ordering them from an Authorized Hakko Distributor if you decide to do this, as they're heavily faked <clone tip placed in faked Hakko packaging to get more money per>).

The Hakko would be better, but it would depend on the cost. Took a quick look at eBay.de, and there are some decently priced Hakko 888D's there, but be careful, as they're from the US and 120V (would need a 230V - 120V step down transformer, which will increase your costs).

Hakko 888D: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Hakko-FX888D-23BY-FX888D-Soldering-Station-Replaces-936-12-FX888-Solder-Station-/380727447690?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58a51fd08a

Depends on what you can get. If you live in US you probably have countless options. If not, then I'd stick with chinese stuff like Aoyue or thousand different brands that look indentically. They are not that bad in the end. Of course there's a huge gap between those and genuine Ersa or Weller (not to mention Metcal or JBC) but they do they job (I use Xytronic, which is probably a tad better than most of the chinese stuff, but still waaay worse than Ersa or Weller).
I love the smell of FR4 in the morning!
