Absolutely fine, they're a reputable brand - though like all manufacturers, they do make a wide range of different types of cap, some of which are better than others.

Just be sure and buy from a reputable distributor.  There are a lot of fakes on ebay.

I've torn apart a few HP laser printers from the 90's - early 2000 recently, they all used Rubycon inside. I guess if you trust HP quality you can trust that they use good quality brand names in their machines too.

OT: the HP printers build quality and material used feel so much beefier than other brands like Brother and Epson etc...

Be careful buying components on ebay.   There are some good deals on the site but also some truly bad ones. Resistors that seem cheap are cheap because the leads are made with 30AWG wire, bends like crazy, barely strong enough to get the lead in the pcb.  Capacitors can be counterfeit as can chips. Opened one capacitor to find it had a much smaller capacitor inside the can, just soldered to the bigger cans leads. I bought a keil Jtag device that the lister swore was legitimate, it was a china clone ,and he had the nerve to send a cd with it, including illegal copies of the keil compilers.  Power adapters are another big no, most of them are not mains isolated, have just a diode for regulation and the things like USB hubs they sell don't even contain diodes that block the powered hub power from the host pc.

Shoot, I guess those Bourns 10-turn pots I got for $4.98 each were too good to be true. Shipped free from China, but with "Made in Mexico" printed on them.

I've been advised by a tv engineer to avoid Chinese Caps , such as capxon, fcon, ksc evercon g-luxon,leon, nxc tcapo, tk,  most japanese one's are apparently good such as Rubycon,Sanyo,Fujitsu,Nippon, Chemicon, MCZ,Hitachi kZ,KZJ KZG , EMPTY RECTANGLE NO NAME MADE BY CHEMICON.
That's the list he gave me.
ps I have some Jamicon made in USA, so I'm guessing there good to.

He's right...*BUT* Chemicon KZJ and KZG are actually VERY much prone to premature failure. They are just as bad as any of the crap Chinese capacitors out there. Avoid them at all costs. The rest of the Chemicon lineup is very respectable. Just avoid those two types.

Chemi-con, Nichicon, Rubycon, Panasonic, Hitachi, Elna, and Sanyo. That's about all I'd consider.

OK I'll cross those two off the list, all this is a real eyeopener, you can, I see build up a really good data base on all this stuff
Cheers

Don't knock Cornell Dubilier too much. They make some pretty impressive big caps.

Yeah that's why I didn't list them. I don't know how Cornell Dubilier is still in business with the prices they have. Vishay caps aren't even all that great for the prices they have either.

If you really can't find a particular capacitor, and you're not gonna use them in a place where there's lots of heat, then Teapo and Lelon are acceptable. But only under those conditions, there's not much difference in prices to go cheap on capacitors.

But otherwise, you should stick to Nichicon, United Chemi Con, Rubycon, Panasonic, Hitachi, Sanyo... might wanna look into Suncon (http://www.sunelec.co.jp/eng/index.html), I heard they bought the Sanyo factory when they decided to get out of electrolytic business.

I didn't work with Illinois Capacitor, Elna, Cornell Dubilier enough to recommend them or say they're OK. And to be honest, they're not worth my time to experiment, since what Farnell has it's too expensive compared to these other popular common brands.

ps Yes, UCC KZG and KZJ are faulty, have issues.  Same with Nichicon HM series from 2004-early 2005, sometimes you find them on eBay, people sell old stock or unused stock.

I don't blame Farnell for selling Samwha, I guess they'd be fine in some devices, as far as I know the low esr series from Samwha aren't sold, just general purpose series.

It's more upsetting when I see their Multicomp capacitors, made by SJE in Taiwan and China ( http://www.capacitors.com.tw/favorite.htm ) or some other no-name manufacturer ... barely any useful technical specs in their datasheets for those.

They're ok but they're just low impedance/low esr ... somewhat not suitable for high frequency locations such as switching power supplies, monitors etc. They will work but you'd want something a bit better than these series for circuits with high frequency.
