WTB 8590E Assembly-Level Repair manual
« on: April 03, 2019, 12:27:56 pm »
I'm seeking a HP/Agilent manual, titled
   8590E Series Analyzers Assembly-Level Repair. PN: 08590-90316
   Supercedes:   08590-90300
   Printed 2001

It's a 675 page monster, with 18 big foldouts, some 5x page width.
I have it in PDF but it's too unwieldy. So seeking an original paper copy, in the original 3-ring binder.
Looks like in the attached pics.

Sadly all the old reliable sellers of printed manuals are gone.
http://www.consolidatedsurplus.com/
http://www.yourmanualsource.com
http://www.manualserver.com/
http://www.sarrio.com/
https://www.etestmanuals.com/  Jim Tucker  now only sells PDF

There are a few random others, all with small stock and don't have this one.
Tonight I nearly got burned - found an ebay seller listing 9 'new' for sale.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-8590-Series-Service-Guide-in-Three-Ring-Binder/192477508455
The listing _seems_ to be saying they are new originals. Until you ctl-c the description text and paste it in a text editor, where some hidden text appears. Admitting they are reprints from an original, in some random ring binder. Bah.

If anyone has this manual or can suggest where I'd find one, please let me know.

Artekmanuals.com has a pdf version for USD 10 and full schematic manual for 25. I've bought a lot of manuals from them and can highly recommend.

Yes, that's where I bought my PDF copy of this and the CLIP schematics. The quality is higher than average but still not what I'd call good. Also has Artek watermarks all over, which is annoying. A form of vandalism, very disrespectful of the original document.

Anyway... I can't speak for others, but personally I find trying to use large manuals (with huge foldouts) intensively in PDF form is a kind of inhumane torture, that should be forbidden under the Geneva conventions.

I'd be searching for an original paper copy of the CLIP (Component level information pack) set too, except I know I have no chance there. Am looking into getting a print made from the PDF. Which is possible because the foldouts are all 'only' double page width. As opposed to up to five times page width in the Service Guide. I'll just have to live with the f-ing watermarks, unless I first go to the effort of editing them all out. 355 pages.

this maybe
https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-8590E-series-spectrum-analyzer-chapter-1-5-operation-maintenance-NF12-R/323762059974?hash=item4b61b8fac6:g:O38AAOSwC8Zb~BcP

Thanks. Some potential there. I'll ask the seller for more details. They have two listings:
HP 8590E series spectrum analyzer chapter 1-5 operation & maintenance NF12 R    $39.98     323762059974
HP 8590E Series spectrum analyzer chapter 6-16 NF10 R                           $39.98     323762043118

Which appears to be the correct edition split in two, but is probably a photocopy. So almost certainly the foldouts will be missing or messed up.
Awaiting seller's response.

Can you fix that with a PDF editor, or are they baked in?

Firstly the PDFs are 'protected', which just means using one of the online services to unlock them.
I used https://smallpdf.com/unlock-pdf

Then to extract individual schematics at full resolution from the pdf to separate PNG files, I used photoshop CS6. The watermark texts are in the images same as everything else. There wasn't any indication that they are maintained as separate layers or entities in the PDF. In fact given the intention to 'visibly sign' a document like that to stop 3rd parties selling it, it would be pointless to add watermarks in a way that allowed easy removal.

I'm pretty sure removal would require manually photoshop editing them out of every single page. Incredibly tedious.
But I'm going to a commercial copy service on Monday, will ask them about it.

About that repair manual on ebay, maybe....
Sigh. There seems to be some kind of curse on 'manuals for this spectrum analyzer.' First that incredible runaround from the 8594E seller about the User Guide. Now this seller with the potential copy of the repair manual, is.... really something else. The pages shown in his photos are absolutely definitely that exact same manual, though in different ring binders as two volumes of some doco set for a larger system. But is it an original or a photocopy, and are the foldouts there? Can not tell from his pics.
I've nicely asked him if he could please look.  He's responded once, one line, no useful information. Tried again, no reply so far.
Questions:
1. Is the title page Part Number  08590-90316 ?
2. Is it original or a photocopy?
3. Are the large foldouts present? Pages range 381 to 551. (Will be in his 2nd binder)

Is that too much to ask? Too complicated/hard? Apparently it is.

If it's a photocopy the foldouts will very likely be absent or messed up.
