I have been solving this exact issue just recently.
I have ordered a replacement from this vendor last October (doesn't seem to have anything on sale now, but it is Chinese New Year, so check in a week or two):
http://www.ebay.fr/usr/shop*forpartsThe display has arrived fine, well packed and works like the original. If you decide to get one, be careful to check for exposed contacts on the sides. The original VFD has them insulated. I have put there some electrical tape to prevent them from touching the metal shielding frame holding the VFD and shorting out the power supply. I think that is the issue @schopi68 was referring to.
The hardest part of the repair is probably disassembling the meter - even with the service guide it can be a bit non-obvious how to take the chassis apart (
do not pull at the ribbon cables/connectors, one has to
push the connector down to release it!). Desoldering the old VFD and putting in the new one has been perhaps 10 minutes of work tops.
