Cheaper bits at Jaycar
« on: August 28, 2013, 07:57:10 pm »
As some know I'm a big fan of using prewound RF chokes for inductors instead of toroids in projects where possible.

The only problem is their cost. For several years Jaycar had them at $1.80 while Altronics were $1 or more cheaper.

Anyway went into Jaycar a couple of days ago and they're down to 50c each.

So it might be worth stocking up.

Jaycar seem to have lowered their prices on a lot of other bits - eg LM386.

Enjoy it while it lasts and hope that it isn't part of a DSE style clearance!

PS: Desirable values for radio projects include:

1uH (for pi network 7 MHz QRP rigs)
2.2uH (for pi network 3.5 MHz QRP rigs or front end 14 MHz rigs)
4.7 uH (for front end 7 MHz rig - resonates with 100 pF - also pi network 160m rig)
10 uH (for front end 3.5 MHz rig - resonates with 200 pF)
22uH (for front end 160m rig)

100uH general purpose

470uH is good for 3 kHz audio filters at 8 ohm impedence
1.5mH is good for 1 kHz audio filters at 8 ohm impedence

Having started working at Jaycar a few months ago, I've noticed a few times that the prices for components are actually lower than what's on the boxes, sometimes substantially.

That's also true. Great for the customer but not so good for sales revenue (as the store loses some of the increased sales that lower prices would generate).
