Radio Shack has Panavise 301 on clearance $19.97
« on: September 10, 2013, 10:51:02 pm »
Note for USA buyers:  Radio Shack has put their stock of Panavise 301 vises on clearance for $19.97.  This is less than half the typical Internet price of about $45.00, and you don't have to pay shipping.  Check your local Radio Shack and/or look at radioshack.com to see which stores have them in stock.

I have no connection with the company, and generally get disgusted when I go in there, but this was too good a deal to pass up.  I picked up one of the last two at my local store.  These are handy for holding circuit boards and such while soldering.

Thanks for the heads-up.  Some of the Radio Shacks around me sell the PanaVise 324.  Maybe they'll have those on clearance as well.  They had them on sale for half price not too long ago but I missed that.

I guess I'll stop over to RadioShack on the way home from work then. I've been meaning to go recently anyway.

I didn't take it apart.
I turned it on.

The only stupid question is, well, most of them...

Save a fuse...Blow an electrician.

Grabbed mine! Thanks for the tip.

The guy at my local Rat Shack knows me, so nobody follows me around trying to sell me cellphones. He's seen me come in at 8.45p for passives enough times.

Seems like RS is clearing out all sorts of things, there's a few discussions about it on http://www.reddit.com/r/arduino

Several years ago I bought a PanaVise with the 315 Circuit Board Holder and I haven't used it for years.
Both because it's too high (I can't rest my hand/wrist/arm firmly against something to steady it for tiny SMD stuff), and because the jaws actually don't clamp down very neatly, it's like they're in two different planes.  Maybe the regular PanaVises at least function better.

I occasionally wonder if there's something wrong with me, but then I see Dave soldering right on the benchtop too.

I just got one of the last 22-812 DMMs on clearance for $15. It looks like they've refreshed it and the replacement 22-039 has a USB interface  :(

We'll have to wait and see I guess if the USB interface connects to a virtual serial port inside the PC or if it has a proprietary USB driver. A data port on an instrument is most useful if the protocol (hardware & software) is documented so you can link it to other software.

I prefer my PanaVise 396 with its wide opening and rubber covered jaws.
It is mounted on a 308 base -- very heavy and stable and can be moved anywhere on the bench.

Lucky guys!, I paid $375 for my panavise.. :)
Well, it was the 301, with 308 base, and a couple of extra heads (315+203), very happy with the purchase, even if a bit expensive.

Does anybody have the Harbor Freight Vise:
http://www.harborfreight.com/2-3-4-quarter-inch-articulated-vacuum-vise-3311.html
It has the suction bottom like the Panavise 381
How does it compare with the Panavise? It costs only $19.99 any time all the time unless you get a coupon and then is less :)

I have it. I think it's just fine as a bench vise. The jaws don't open as far as the Panavise, but it's still a decent price.

I was in Radio Shack today and noticed that they've lowered the price of the Panavise 301 to $15.98.  There were two still in stock at this particular Radio Shack.

They also have some of their component packs on clearance.  These are the ones that were over-priced at about $20.  They're now $6 to $8 on clearance, which makes them more reasonable.  The LED component pack and the capacitor packs are $6 each and the switch pack is $8.  The resistor pack is $7 but it still seems over-priced considering it is just 60 1/2W resistors.

I just went through all of Radio Shack's clearance items on their website and came across a couple of great deals for noobs.

The Make: Electronics Components Pack 1 and Pack 2 are on clearance for $17.98 each.  They're regularly $99.  This is an in-store, while-supplies-last offer so get them while you can.

It looks like they contain a pretty good assortment of components.  They are made to go with the Make: Electronics book but they contain pretty generic stuff that are always handy to have around.

The second pack has (among other things) 10 555 timers.  Noobs love the 555 timer IC.

Edit: I talked to the sales person at one of my local Radio Shacks and neither of these kits were available at any of the stores in the sales district so they may not be very easy to find.

I own that little hunk of junk. The vice itself is mechanically solid but the rubber pads on the jaws won't stay on ant the suction cup is only fair in its suction.

Pros: Won't snap in half and it's dirt cheap
Cons: Won't stay put on any real world flat surfaces for very long and the jaw pads constantly fall off.

Thanks, TerminalJack505. I got one today at US$15.98.

For the ones looking for a decent price for a resistor pack, check BG micro: http://www.bgmicro.com/RES1363.aspx

The Panavise 203, 366 or the 376 (or whatever rail you prefer depending on the opening you need) with whatever base you like (such as the 380) make for a very nice system.  What makes it all extra nice is the 239 wheel attachment with the finger hole ($3.49 list price, $2.69 on Amazon).  The whole thing is a little pricey (but I blew an extra $25 or so trying to save $ on a cheaper alternative), and the 239 is like a strawberry on top (assuming you like strawberries).  For holding boards while you solder the system is pretty nice.
