Heads up on Ebay: HP 6633B (0-50V 2A) power supplies
« on: July 03, 2014, 07:03:35 am »
These don't crop up too often; the 663xB series are superb power supplies, and although the 6632B (0-20V @ 5A) is fairly readily available, the other models in the range are elusive by comparison.

This seller has a bunch of 6633B units for sale - 0-50V @ 2A.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/yokohama-premium/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2654

They're shipping from Japan for free... can't imagine what that's costing in postage (they're *heavy*!), and with that in mind the total price of US$300 all-in is pretty good IMHO.

Note: they'll be set to run of 100V, but that's easily changed. The service manual shows how to reconnect the mains transformer for other voltages, and it's perfectly straightforward to do. Just remember to open it up and swap a few wires around before plugging in, especially if you're in Europe!

No connection with the seller - just figured it was a good chance to pick up a rare item of decent kit.

Well, maybe there is a yet invisible tax to it... requiring you to dispose TEPCO waste from Fukushima?
A radionuclide sample box might be shipped with it? >:D

I wonder what is the difference between 6631, 32 and this 33, all are 100w, are there any posibilities to reconfigure them ?

I would be amazed if there isn't significant differences in the circuitry. Dealing with 20V at 5A is very different to dealing with 100V at 1A

The service manuals are online for those desirous of detailed investigation

I actually looked at converting one of my 6632B's into a 6633B at one point. The circuits are very similar, though IIRC the primary transformer is actually different between the models, rather than just being a common transformer with its secondary windings connected differently. That was the show-stopper.

Everything else is pretty similar, and it's even possible to reset the model number in the firmware so it knows the proper voltage and current ranges to accept.

Yes, found them, but found not much of interrest in it, but I found that you actually have the 6632b..  but you probably don't have free shipping to Norway :)
Not sure if I have room for these either, heavy, and looks to be very big in size.

I can't do free shipping to Norway, but I can take away the VAT, so the shipping would effectively be free.

That would be something!

What does this mean: "output terminal perspex cover is missing from these units."

I guess it means originally it had a perspex plate over the terminal block, but this is now missing.

No show stopper.

I've got a few of the perspex covers, just far fewer than I have supplies.

My PSU arrived today.

It's quite old and tired, in need of a clean, and the display is quite dim. That much doesn't surprise me, and although it's a shame it's not bright and shiny, it's not a problem. Converting it from 100V to 240V mains was dead easy, there's a wiring diagram in the service manual and it's just a case of swapping a few spade terminals around. Just don't forget!

It wasn't well packaged, though, just a layer of bubble wrap inside a cardboard box, which appears to have offered little or no protection in the post. There are quite a few small plastic bits that have broken off, which is really annoying because it's so completely unnecessary. The front panel knob was damaged too, though fortunately the design is such that it is actually possible to put the bits back together and bend its clips back into shape. It seems to work OK.

I'm too busy to actually load it up and test it out electrically, but it seems OK. The only things actually loose and rattling around were bits of broken plastic, and they're just cosmetic. The electronics inside were dusty but otherwise look fine.

I won't be buying another, though. (I guess five 663xB power supplies is enough for any one person's lab, right?)
