FS: (UK) Heatsinks (0.04 C/W) 300mm x 32mm x 100mm 1.5Kg
« on: July 26, 2013, 08:40:22 pm »
I've just been coerced into buying a large quantity of high quality heastsinks. They were an unwanted order and are all new and unused, just taken out of the shipping crate.

http://uk.farnell.com/h-s-marston/890sp-03000-a-100/heat-sink-300mm/dp/4106015?Ntt=4106015

http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1692180.pdf

Big heavy (300mm x 32mm x 100mm extruded aluminium, fins are perfect for accepting self tapping screws to attach fans to for ultimate performance (0.04 C/W). 1.5Kg in weight.

List price is £65+VAT anybody want any for £10 each? Shipping is extra of course, but I will ship them anywhere (I'm in the UK).

You should try listing these on any audio sites you may be on (ie DIYAudio). Audio guys would love these things, especially at this price. If you were in the states i'd likely be down for one, alas shipping will likely kill it otherwise.

oooh that's a great idea. Already had a number of people wanting them and I do agree shipping is the biggest cost when they are this cheap.

Shipping to the US would be about £8 each if you buy 5... the more you buy the cheaper shipping becomes. Why not buy 10 or 20 and become my US distributor!!

Unfortunately I doubt most audio enthusiasts would be interested in these. They are clearly manufactured to be used exclusively with a serious amount of forced air cooling, which the audio enthusiasts shuns for obvious reasons.

Fin spacing and the overall physical dimensions makes them perfectly useless for natural convection cooling (fanless, IE. still air).

They would be good if you were building an electronic load where you expect fan noise. I have some of the 200mm ones I purchased for about ten bucks each after discount and a distro FU. The thickness of the aluminum plate should still give pretty good thermal Z even without a fan. They are definetly hefty so you need solid mounting brackets

Absolutely. A small fan would make a world of difference.

I just tend to mention the potential problem, when this subject raises its head. Many beginners seem unaware of the different types of heat sinks, and how to properly put to use - in particular - the convection cooled type.

It can feel rather frustrating, when you see a well built audio power amp, where the builder has put significant time, money and effort into the project. Yet despite this, then the fine machine ends up burning its way through the floorboards, whenever it has been switched on for a few moments.

M. Andras... how can I sell at below the 100 off price? Well... I bought 120 of them for about 1.5 times the scrap aluminium value. They were in a large shipping crate that had been badly handled, about 20 of them had slightly bent fins as a result. The intended customer returned them and I bought them for a very fair price  :)

I buy many, many items like this. At the same time as the heatsinks I bought:

840 off MICROCHIP - PIC18F2520-I/SP (Sealed box of unopened tubes of 15, £50 the lot)
http://uk.farnell.com/microchip/pic18f2520-i-sp/ic-8bit-flash-mcu-18f2520-sdil28/dp/9321233

100 off NICHICON - LLS1H472MELB - CAPACITOR, 4700UF, 50V (£5 the lot)
http://uk.farnell.com/nichicon/lls1h472melb/capacitor-4700uf-50v/dp/8813221

20 off PANASONIC - EETED2D102CA - CAPACITOR, 1000UF, 200V  (£2 the lot)
http://uk.farnell.com/panasonic/eeted2d102ca/capacitor-1000uf-200v/dp/1198614

100 off ROTH ELEKTRONIK - RE200-LFDS - PCB, EUROCARD, FR4, DBL-SIDED, 2.54 (£50 the lot)
http://uk.farnell.com/roth-elektronik/re200-lfds/pcb-eurocard-fr4-dbl-sided-2-54/dp/1172149?Ntt=1172149

100m roll of Nexans RG316 coax (£10)
http://uk.farnell.com/nexans/rg316u-100m/cable-coax-rg316u-100m/dp/1217852

Those were the prices I paid. Obviously they won't be for sale at those prices  :)

I have huge amounts of reels of SMT caps, waffle trays of PICs and memory devices, unopened tubes of all sorts of semiconductors, heavy boxes of capacitors, all sorts of cable, so much stuff I haven't started to look through most of it...

It's specialised cable, meant for high temperature (up to 200C) and high frequency (3GHz).

PayPal is fine, but bank transfer preferred for larger value payments.

1 off £0.50 each
10 off £0.45 each
50 off £0.40 each

Think I've got about 80 left as of a few minutes ago.

Shrugs shoulders, lets guess at £1.50 regardless of quantity? Or I can charge you exactly what the nice lady at the Post Offices extorts out of my wallet on the day. Your choice.

Unfortunately I doubt most audio enthusiasts would be interested in these. They are clearly manufactured to be used exclusively with a serious amount of forced air cooling, which the audio enthusiasts shuns for obvious reasons.
OTOH only a little bit of airflow is required to get a decent level of cooling. So a low noise fan at low rpm together with these heatsinks can provide quite some cooling capacity. A temperature controlled fan is also an option. If an amplifier is pushed to the limits the music is probably much louder than most fans.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Unfortunately, when the good people over on DIYaudio need large heatsinks, then it is usually because they want the output stage(s) to run full on class A. So a temp controlled fan is rather pointless. You either need it, or you don't.

For class AB cooling isn't too much of an issue. 100W rated output is still fairly reasonable. 25W output in class A frequently isn't...

Personally I also prefer my audio gear to be fan less. Fortunately I prefer headphones to speakers, so I don't have much of a problem with cooling. ^-^
