LFS (Buying advice) Looking for a 3.5 inch screen
« on: January 09, 2016, 02:34:06 pm »
Looking for a friend as they have bought an infrared camera for there gun and they want to make a screen for it, the camera resolution it outputs is 1020x596 (PAL) or 1020x508 (NTSC)we don't mind if it is just a screen and controller board as we can make a box or a kit like the camera car ones. Trying to find a high resolution to mean that the infrared camera is not limited.
If possible ebay (looked the best i could find was a 800x480 but don't know if that is a limitation of the size as if the screen size is only a little bit bigger but a higher resolution it would be possible to change the screen size)

Screens with such high resolution in such a small physical size are extremely rare and almost certain to cost a huge pile of money if you can even find one.  IME, there are no such screens available at reasonable prices.

High-resolution viewfinders are still quite rare. I'm not even sure the Sony HVRZ5U viewfinder has full resolution.

If this is for a rifle, etc. you could consider a camera-type eyepiece type viewfinder (vs. a larger screen). For example you can get the viewfinder for a BlackmagicDesign URSA camera that has full 1920 resolution...

There are 4k screens in 5.5'' form factor out there used in Sony Z5 Premium.

However, analog input? Not possible. People simply stopped innovating on analog LCD controllers.
I don't think its anywhere near 4k. Scaling.

The Sony HVRZ5U has two viewfinders:
An eyepiece viewfinder at 852x480
A 3.2 inch screen at 1920x480
I don't believe there are ANY "4K" viewfinders.

Built-in output devices
LCD view fi nder 0.45 inch-type (Viewable area measured diagonally), approx. 1,226,880 dots (852 x 3[RGB] x 480), 16:9 aspect ratio
LCD monitor 3.2 inch-type (Viewable area measured diagonally), XtraFine LCD, approx. 921,600 dots, hybrid type, 16:9 aspect ratio
The "Premium" version appears to have an even lower resolution than the "regular" model.

Right. We get that. I have made several custom cases for raw LCD displays.  But what we are saying is that high-resolution small-size displays are just not available except as high-end camera viewfinders.

Your best bet is probably to get a replacement LCD for ~4" inch smartphones or buy a cheap 4" smartphone and rip out the screen. I'm not aware of a screen smaller than 4" that has at least a qHD resolution.

Here's an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Screen-Display-LCD-Module-LG-Optimus-L7-4G-P875-F5-4-3-IPS-qHD-New-ORIGINAL-/161148943447

Yes, those are great if you are replacing a phone display.  But good luck trying to work out how to drive it as a standalone display.  Simply not practical, IME.
