SOLD (UK) Tenma multimeters
« on: June 22, 2015, 05:29:48 pm »
I've spent a mind-numbing afternoon sorting though a pile of Tenma multimeters. Surprisingly only one of them ended up in the skip, the rest seem to be perfectly well behaved.

All are boxed, with all accessories (leads, thermocouple, isolated USB cable, soft case), look 100% unused. I've tested DC volts, mA, A, resistance, capacitance, temperature and frequency, haven't tested AC volts or current.

72-7732A
http://uk.farnell.com/tenma/72-7732a/multimeter-digital-hand-held-39999/dp/2100036?ost=7732a
How about £60 each including VAT and shipping UK, £65 Euro countries.

72-7730A
http://uk.farnell.com/tenma/72-7730a/multimeter-dig-hand-held-19999/dp/2100035?ost=7730a
How about £45 each including VAT and shipping UK, £50 Euro countries.

72-9400
http://uk.farnell.com/tenma/72-9400/tester-insulation-250v-500v-1kv/dp/2064096
How about £25 including VAt and shipping UK, £30 Euro countries.

I also have one 72-7732A with a backlight that doesn't work, buy that and I'll chuck in a 72-7730A with a good backlight but has a segment out on the top dual display.

ALL SOLD

Any thought of "selling" the broken ones/non working ones for a nominal price so that eevblog members can take a stab at fixing them for educational purposes?  I know it probably isn't worth your time to fix it, but some of us like repairing things.

I do sell broken equipment on here quite regularly, indeed there are 2 broken ones in this FS post.

But a sense my knuckles are being rapped gently here so anybody want a non-working 72-7755 for the cost of shipping plus £1 to cover the cost of packaging?

Sorry, I don't read all your posts in the buy/sell wanted so I probably missed out on your non working equipment.

Additionally, I just thought if you were going to toss it in the skip (garbage) and given the popularity of Dave's repair videos, it would be a good opportunity for some members here to get the equipment and possibly do a repair blog or video.

In the end, it is your equipment to do as you wish, so my suggestion is meant to help out.

Thanks.

The 7732A and 7730A meters are similar to the UNI-T UT71D and UT71B respectively. The only difference that I am aware of, is the presence of 1000V HRC fuses on the Tenma DMMs, to abide by the latest IEC recommendations.
Well worth considering at that price.

Yes, whoever wants a feature filled multimeter for electronics and bench use, those Tenmas are good buys at this price.

Got my meters  :-+

They beep when the lead is in the wrong socket! I can't wait to demonstrate them to the lads at the substation.  ;)

Bargain indeed. I decided to use the meters to fix each other, just for the hell of it.

7732A (no backlight) - Supply VB+ and VB- ok. LEDs light up using diode test function of 7730A. No continuity between the series LEDs despite PCB track and solder joints ok visually. A dab of flux and re-solder and jobs a good 'un :)

7730A (missing segments) - looks like 4 segments are out (3 on the top left digit and the minus sign). This indicates a single connection as LCD is 4 way multiplex.

Tracks and solder pads to the driver IC's all looked good and buzzed out ok. God awful slow continuity tester. The zebra contact pads on the PCB looked a bit tacky from whatever glue substance they use. Cleaned the pads with IPA and re-assembled.

Another meter saved from the landfill behind Farnell HQ :-+

In contrast to Daves UNI-T UT71E teardown these meters are fitted with HRC fuses. They even kindly provide spaces to mount 3 of your favourite MOVs instead of the spark-gap customization option on Daves UNI-T.:-DD

PCB revision labelled V20051010-12 71A(1KV FUSE)

Thank you Ian. I look forward to more dodgy customer return fixer-uppers from you in the future! ;)

Thanks for sharing Macbeth.  This was exactly what I was hoping for with my initial comments regarding repairs.
