Where to get e-paper / e-ink displays?
« on: October 30, 2012, 07:00:21 pm »
Does anyone know where to get small e-ink displays? Say around 1" diagonal. I may need lots of them so I can't take one from an existing device.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

only thing that i've found so far was:
http://store.nexternal.com/eink/standard-segmented-display-samples-c4.aspx
50$ for 5 pieces, but those are character displays

display is one thing .. how are you going to drive it ? the controllers are almost pure unobtainium... unless you can buy a full module ( display + controller ) this is useless. driving these displays (raw) is not easy.

the modules sold by e-ink do NOt come with controller. they are essentially useless. Dialog Semiconductor and Ricoh are the best know producser of the controllers.

Why E-ink ? Sharp has memory LCd that does what you want :
e-ink is a BRAND and a trademark. there are various other names for this kind of displays. Sharp calls em Memory-lcd. google for e-paper and hysteretic LCD

renesas has a quickstart kit with sourcecode that shows you how to initialize and talk to an e-ink controller.

I'm sure that if your definition of "lots" aligns with the manufacturer's, then getting hold of a suitable controller shouldn't be too difficult at all. The problems start if it doesn't...

Memory LCD and hysteretic LCD are not the same as E-ink. They use entirely different technologies.

Thanks for the info and links so far. Memory LCD looks interesting as well but I think e-paper would be nicer.
