SOLD - Agilent/Keysight U5855A Thermal Camera
« on: March 06, 2018, 12:37:32 pm »
I have decided to sell one of my Agilent/Keysight thermal cameras.

A discussion of this camera is to be found here......

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/thermal-imaging/keysight-u5855a-trueir-thermal-imager/msg1175662/#msg1175662

I am looking to recover my investment in this camera but the good news it was purchased from Keysight at a heavily discounted price. I believe it owes me £680 when all taxes were added.
If you want a great Agilent/Keysight thermal camera with resolution enhancement included, this may be the deal for you ?

Radio Spares still sell this camera for almost £4000.

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/thermal-imaging-cameras/8773141/

Farnell also sold this camera and they have the datasheet and accessories listed here....

http://uk.farnell.com/keysight-u5855a-thermal-imager?CMP=KNC-GUK-GEN-KWL-ELEMENT14&mckv=_dt%7Cpcrid%7C186366570608%7C&gclid=CjwKCAiAlfnUBRBQEiwAWpPA6YfKRhK3SGk9O3jR_DDiI_9T-AZ2g4zNGtc0y6X2zU44o-PBhtILYBoCdmwQAvD_BwE

The camera will come with a brand new genuine Keysight Li-Ion battery, a brand new genuine OE power supply and the USB communications lead. This camera was sold by Keysight as Ex Demo stock and is in superb condition.

I am making no profit on this deal (in fact I am taking a loss on the battery and power supply) and Keysight sold all of their demo stock.

Interested parties please contact me via PM to discuss offering my camera a new home. This camera may be shipped to most countries of the world.

It has a manual focus lens with 28 x 21° FoV; but the superresolution with 9hz output makes me question how it's done. Wouldn't a moving scene show artifacts? Unless they take captures and shits at 36hz and add up every 4 to output 9hz.

This is a 160x120 detector outputting 320x240; that is a good step compared to the other camera with 160x120 detector that outputs 80x60 you were talking about.

I am interested in the software features? Can you output a 320x240 image with no data burned into it?

At the price Fraser is offering it, it's a relatively good purchase. However, for what the original retail price is, this is junk, even if you consider that it's a high quality, custom sensor, NEC Avio camera stuffed into an Agilent gun-style housing.
For £4000 you can easily get a FLIR E53 or E75, ex-demo or otherwise, and hack it to 640x480 native resolution(though it's Linux, might require investigation).

I believe the resolution enhancement is image stacking. Most thermal camera microbolometers output high frame rates and the image processing stages limit the output to the user to <9fps. I have a thermal camera with 120fps at the microbolometer but only 30fps at the user display. Microbolometers can operate at decent speeds to enable image stacking. That is the difference between the OEM applying an image stacking resolution enhancement and a user applying it to the low frame rate output of the camera.

The manual focus on the U5855A is interesting, it incorporates a ring encoder that automatically aligns the visible light image at different distances :) The camera knows its focus point from the data it receives from the ring encoder.A nice feature and manual focus is superior to the fixed focus of the FLIR E4  :)

More from me when I get 5 minutes.

Hmmm , I do not think NEC AVIO gear has ever been called 'Junk' before. It has always been at the top end of the price range in Industry. Expensive does not mean 'Junk' it means unaffordable to many  ;D

As to hacking cameras........ we have been very lucky with the poorly protected FLIR E4. I will leave that here  ;)

There's a question of value for money. Yes, it's true, NEC makes amazing devices, but £4000 for uncooled LWIR 160x120? No, that just goes against common sense.

Somehow I feel both sad that I didn't buy it and happy that the temptation is gone.
