Why I can't stop watching it?
« on: January 23, 2019, 09:06:10 am »
After a couple of years lurking at the Youtube channel I really needed to share how useful and entertaining this was.
I think I've watched almost 250 videos, approx 150 hours of real infotainment!
As a non native english speaker I can say I understand 95% of the sentences. The only thing that I learnt the hard way (??) was:
"jool" = "dual"
This drove me crazy for a while.
I'm not involved in electronics but I've got a STEM background (engineer brother, spent my childhood in taking apart stuff to look inside).
So this is pure juice for me!
Sorry to see that italians viewers are a handful...
I think I've never seen a single mailbag from Italy! And yes... mailbag it's my favorite segment!
My wet dream is to see my second hand SGI Octane II being torn apart in a dedicated video but...
Weighs 25 kg, shipping it to Australia would open a small hole in the ozone layer!!!!
Also, this would open a small hole in my bank account.
Shall I write down a list of the reasons I got mesmerized from Dave's content?

1) no bumpers, no music, no logos, no mid-video ads (Linus style)

2) no fancy photography and lighting that makes videos look all the same

3) no script

4) no secret agenda

5) number of video plays or populartity is not the author's only drive

6) earns money in a sane way (selling top notch equipment)

7) is mentally and phisically healthty -> encourages healthy lifestyle

8) lives in a clean and safe environment (except from spiders, crocodiles, etc.) -> makes me want to travel

9) teach something I find extremely useful in a really palatable way

10) never "get dirt" with politics and other "divide et impera" stuff

11) intellectual honesty

12) sense of humour

Ok... one day maybe I'll post a "cahier des doléances" paper. At the moment I can't find any reason to stop watching this great content!
That's about it. Cheers from Rome, Italy.
Francesco

What are "bumpers"?
I gave up the intro many years ago, I like going straight to the material.

2) no fancy photography and lighting that makes videos look all the same

Lazy pays off  ;D

3) no script

Tried them and failed miserably, I'm just hopeless at it.

7) is mentally and phisically healthty -> encourages healthy lifestyle

EEVfit channel coming soon, gotta be a huge market for nerd fitness? ;D

10) never "get dirt" with politics and other "divide et impera" stuff

I did a few videos on politics etc but quickly realised it just pollutes the channel. Same for politics on the forum here, everything will end up just hating each other!
Industry politics is fair game though!

Thank you for the reply!
Funny to think that's the ACTUAL DAVE answering from the other emisphere, with a 10 hours jet lag, in the middle of the summer...
Bumpers are those shitty cgi animations with logos spinning aroung and uselessly loud electronic music. So glad that Youtube features the "right arrow" key skip-5-seconds function....
Politics pollutes indeed. It can break up families, friendships, it can disrupt businesses and lot more.
Cheers,
Francesco

Francesco, where Dave lives is nearly as far away from where crocodiles live as where you are.
Remember, there are crocs in the Nile.

But I do have spiders in my yard that can potentially kill me. And snakes if I didn't keep my grass mowed.

Do you have the "Giant Huntsman Spiders" in your area.
They are supposedly very scary with up to 30 cm leg span!

I frequent similar areas to Dave and while we often get Huntsman spiders 10cm or so, I don't think I've ever encountered one more than 15cm across.

I did meet this guy next to my water meter, though...

He was a good size - about 2.5cm across.

Not sure what you mean by Linus style. Do you mean the linustechtips mid video sponsorship segues?

Yes, Dave doesn't do that (although I think it would be hilarious to watch Dave try, I sense an April Fools video) however some of his videos do have ads inserted mid-video by YouTube.    I know Dave has every right to monetize the videos and I don't mind the start of video ads that much but the mid-video ads are annoying as heck.  Doesn't happen on all the videos so it might just be Dave forgetting to turn off the mid-video ad "feature" or maybe just random luck.  Either way it sucks when I hit one.  Otherwise I greatly enjoy watching his stuff, just wish there was a reliable YouTube alternative Dave could use (maybe if Floatplane ever actually comes out of alpha).

I think that would make a hilarious April fool's joke. All the YouTube commenters would lose their minds! :D

I can just imagine how it might go:

"Hi. Today we're going to be doing a teardown of this nifty piece of equipment I have here in front of me, but first I want to take a couple of minutes to talk to you about Viking Wars Clan-ville Crush, the fantastic new mobile game from Shitty Derivative Games Studio. Take on friends and enemies alike in this blah blah blah..."

LOL. You're not alone. Jewel? What jewel? Haven't seen any jewel. What jewel is he talking about? The next was "Let's give it a burl". Let's give it a what? I only deciphered this when an American quoting Dave pronounced it with an American accent.

Sure, very common, one used to live in the lab, but he wasn't that big:

I had missed that video, thanks !
That was a nice one in your lab.

Spiders in Germany are tiny in comparison.
