What about doing individual Mailbag items? Not big ones, of course, but maybe small ones, just until your backlog is caught up. If while doing a small one, it turns into a big one, you could simply stop recording and set it aside until your regular mailbag entry. Then when you do the regular mailbag entry you could use the part you already recorded, and edit it into the main mailbag recording.

So, turn the camera on, pick a ball, close your eyes, toss it, then rant about or describe whatever item it fell on.
Be it a new scope in a box, or a hammer left on the floor.
Should be fun and give you topic hooks to talk about, no?

Wouldn't a longer EEVblab just be a regular EEVBlog post? What time frame did you have in mind to count it as a long blab?

Here's a few that come to mind:

-Various Chinese Product fails (or people's attitudes towards such)
-Proprietary DRM BS (like the EEPROM'd lightning connector)
-Idiots who think electrical component ____ solves everything (in my case, dealing with morons who think PLCs are god's gift to everything industrial)
-Older people who whine about modern technology and blindly assume it's bad
-Product ___ which shot itself in the foot (like the various Rigol pants down videos)
-Young people who think "lookie I OSHW'd this" and assume they know everything in Electronics design
-People who think that every design has to be "pretty" and/or using "new technolgy" aka wank
-People who think that there is no point in making a design and that a electronics design can't be a work of art

Dave, I would like to hear about your experience with selling electronics kits. What kind of kits? What were the problems? You hinted a few times that this is a tough business but would be interesting to hear what were the challenges.

I'd vote for reviews on cheap test equipment from Ebay like LCR meters, DMMs, frequency generators, etc. Some are good value for money.

Dave, if you have worked in cubicles or in an open workspace area, perhaps you could comment on the new trend to take down walls and promote "collaboration". My company seems to be going this way and I would find it interesting to know your take on it.

That freaks the crap out of engineers, it's evil.
At Altium we (and the programmers) had full seated height cubicles, but the arts people had the open plan desks in a circles all facing each other. All by-design of course.

I am always amaze of the disease of many nerds that want to pay peanuts for the Chinese goods but can't stop complain how badass they are, and yet keep going back to buy more (guess there must be jackpots they struck that remain silent, and so the endless recurrence).

Admittedly, I can't deny I have that disease, a mild one I want to think.  Personally, what I don't understand is the people behind all these products can put in so much engineering efforts to make almost an acceptable product but skim on some totally non-sensical saving that ruin the whole thing.  Maybe it is this painful feeling on the waste of engineering efforts that makes the love-hate relationship on these so called "one-hung-low" stuff.

Same here. I used to work in a very noisy open office space with people passing by talking on their mobile phones. Once I quit / worked in my own office I noticed how much better I could concentrate and do a much better job.

I don't necessarily need to have a shut door, as music and a good quality pair of headphones help me concentrate, but my job also requires constant change of places (from bench to my workstation), and the occasional customer call - thus it is very difficult to be plugged all day long (not that I wanted to be either - even the best headphones tend to be very tiring).

One of our distributors had the entire sales team allocated in groups of four desks facing each other in constant phone calls, only divided by a 1/2 meter divider. How could they get anything done was something that always intrigued me.
