This thread is in response to a Twitter post Dave made today.

Dave, what do you think about releasing all episodes on Bluray disc? Not anything fancy with menus and such, but literally a dump of files burnt to a BD (or three). I'm not suggesting give it away for free, but throw it up on your store for fans to purchase should they wish to support you in this way. Maybe split them up by year going all the way back to the first episode?

If there is a huge demand for it, rather than burning them yourself, send a master off to a disc duplication company to produce the discs for you. For a single BD-25 disc with full colour print and UV gloss on the disc itself, supplied with case, you're looking at about $5.60 per disc in quantities of 100 discs from Implant Media. Yes, you can shop around but these guys have a really nice online quotation/ordering system.

Hell, if I could own the complete series (to-date) of EEVblog, I'd certainly pay for it! I did try downloading them all from Youtube, but it just took up too much room on my NAS. The only thing you might need to do is re-compress them into a more suitable format/file size, but a lot of programs allow you to run that sort of thing in batches. (Maybe one day they might end up in the National Film and Sound Archive)

Maybe Dave can do a package deal? Blu-ray drive plus EEVblog collection, $199. BUT, if you order now, he'll also throw in an autographed copy of David's singing in the shower audio CD at no extra cost. That's a $202.99 value!!

(And no Steve, I know you, you can't have it on VHS.)

Master originals take about 8TB
Videos in recent times are in the order of 2GB each on average say.
A blu-ray holds 50GB, so say 25 or so per disc for recent videos.

You are looking at a 150+ Blu-ray disc set.

Ouch! So for original quality clips, you're basically looking at a hard disk drive (or two). What about in H.264 or H.265 format? What kind of compression do you get on an average video?

Any idea how many hours you've clocked up?

Even heavily compressed down by 1/8th the size to 1TB total is still a 20 disc set. At that point, putting it on a hard drive is better.

The masters are already in H264 format. Compression ratio depends on content. Screen captures compress really well because little changing info.
I render at a variable bit rate, with a mixed minimum and a higher peak value, depending upon content type (4K, 1080p, or screen capture).

You can see the difference in file sizes for a normal video vs a screen capture for roughly the same length

Have you tried H.265/HEVC, not as a master format, but as an output? It's supposed to be highly efficient and yes, there is a slight drop in quality (if you're a nerd like me), but overall, it's quite decent. It's a bit like what MP3 was to PCM files.

It doesn't matter how much you squash it, it will still require someone with a lot of free time to watch the entire back catalog. I didn't even watch all of it the first time around. Not for at least 5 years.

With the inherent variety of EEVblog content you'd at least hope most of the audience is just a little discriminating. No-one will watch all of it.

Oops, 8TB is for the entire RAW video footage + master renders. Will have to check...

And that's perfectly fine. Why not still offer people the choice? Those who don't want it, wouldn't buy it (or would only buy it to support Dave).

Aww. How about D-VHS instead? 

To be honest, while I do rather like the idea of having the entire EEVBlog collection, I think it would be too impractical and too expensive.
