What's this Move Topic icon all about ?
« on: March 03, 2018, 10:01:21 am »
So what's all the fuss about ?

When Dave adds a new feature to the forum SW he normally announces it so we get a heads up and put any new features immediately to use.
Forum and Google searches failed to find any sort of introduction to this Move Topic feature so let's examine it.
I also PM'ed Simon and he knew nothing about it so I thought we should do some checks to see how functional it really was.

In EEVblog full site view (not on phones or tablets), the thread starter (OP) gets an arrow to the far right of the Last Post icon and it's only visible in Board view.

EDIT
Important: To be able to see it like below and easily access it you must edit your profile Look and Layout.
Profile/Look and Layout, last item on the page: Show quick-moderation as, select Icons.

See also Muttley's instructions for further enhancements:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/what's-this-move-topic-icon-all-about/msg1446600/#msg1446600

Like this for each and every thread I've started:

So what's it all about ?  :-//
Hover your mouse pointer over the arrow and Move Topic pops up !  :o

Click on it and wow, a new forum feature.
It's been around for a few weeks.

Click on the drop-down arrow and more wows, you can shift your topic to the Board of your choice:

Great when you've inadvertently started a thread in the wrong board.  :-[

So a question; can everybody see this arrow for topics they've started ? A; Yes, if Profile settings are st correctly.
Newbies, Contributors, Regular Contributors and Supers ? A;  Seems so
Have we all got equal access to the Move Topic feature ? A; Yes
Could 'Thanks' once given follow a moved thread ? A; Yes

So in some attempt to prove its functionality and worth I'll start with it here and every few days Move (this) Topic into the main Boards around the forum for good visibility for many members, finishing back here after a week or two. (EEVblog Specific)

Who knows what will happen to it on the way around the forum.  :scared:
Beginners next.
Over to General Chat.
On to Test Equipment.
Most have had a look at this now so off to Projects, Designs and Techy stuff.
A short stink in Repair.
Another in Metrology.
Over to Manufacturing and Assembly.
A day or so in the Supporters Lounge, but we got stuck there, see reply #29.
Home = EEVblog Specific

Replies welcomed.

Notes.
Thread/reply maintains the same date and time in whatever board as when posted.

As MarkF identifies, there's also a Move Topic button on the bottom left of an OP's page:

I don't see the arrow. This was in General Chat. I assume board view is Home --> General chat.
You won't !
Only on threads where you're the OP and only in 'Board' view where you can just see all the threads/topics.

This is in TE now and haven't decided where to move it to next.
One option allowed is to leave a redirect post.......haven't tried that yet.

We're doing a random forum tour !  ;D
Finishing in EEVblog Specific where it started.....not sure when, probably when the view count slows right down.

We often get reports to move threads because someone posted in the wrong section. So people can now move their own threads.
I don't see the harm in it, and SMF is very smart in that is keep track of existing URL links and redirects automatically, so it's not like someone will move something and break links.

I was looking at a thread where I was the OP. But you'd better clarify just what this "board" view is. I just clicked on HOME then scrolled down to General Chat where my thread was clicked on that and I didn't see an arrow.

The screen looks a lot like what you posted. Just without the arrow.
Really ?  :-//
Are you viewing on a PC in full forum view ?

If you go to Profile/Posts/Topics there's all the threads/topics you've started and links to each. Take note of the board it's in and the date of the last post to find it. Each and everyone of your topics should show an arrow for you, the OP, but not if you click on/enter your thread.

The same as wilfred I can't see anywhere in my profile settings either where it mentions a board only view, where do you alter that option ?.

Additionally, what happens to the people who are currently viewing a thread when it gets moved ?, do they get bumped off or go along for the ride and transported elsewhere on the forum ?, if the later is correct then this could inadvertently lead to unauthorised people being transported into the supporters lounge by accident, theoretically anyway.

Look at the first pic I posted; the bottom of the Test Equipment board, sorry for any confusion but that's what I mean by 'board' view. Some call it Test Equipment forum, but a forum within a forum ?  :scared:

Sorry, I'm on a PC with full view and still don't see the arrow alongside a thread I created as you can see in the capture below.

I'm the same as Muttley, no arrow on any of my threads. And I do have some older threads that would fit better in other boards so this feature would be most welcome.

I don't have an arrow.  But for a topic I created, I have a "MOVE TOPIC" button in the lower left that takes me to tautech's second pic in his first post

Is this confined withing the Test Equipment board at the moment? Because I was trying in General Chat.

Should work in all boards.

OK Muttley I think I found the 'switch' for you all to see the 'Move Topic' arrow icon.

In your page above; Profile/Look and Layout, last item on the page: Show quick-moderation as, select Icons.

I'll just do a double check now ............Yep definitely select: Show quick-moderation as Icons

OP edited with instruction of the 'switch' to enable in profile.

I altered that box on the profile look and layout page and can confirm that a thread whom I was the author now displays an arrow in the far right column, as mentioned above everyone would still have the move topic icon at the bottom left of their own threads as always which appears to do exactly the same job.

I also discovered that if you select Show quick moderation as checkboxes you can then nominate multiple threads to move all at once, obviously they would all need to be in the same board or displayed on the same page for the selection process.

This is what I see. Now I haven't needed to move topics in 8 years and I don't expect to suddenly need to. I'm just adding grist to the mill in case it helps someone else. But if no-one else reports difficulty then I see no reason to dig deeper just for me.
Did you click the 'Change Profile? before you took the screenshots ?
The settings as you have them should work to display the arrow and a check box column like in Muttley's screenshot.

Wilfred I agree, experienced members are unlikely to need this 'feature' however new members often post in the incorrect board and with this they can self-moderate and shift a thread to were it's better suited to live.
It should help keep the forum tidier and not littered with "Moderator Please Delete Me" remnants of which they can't delete anyway, only the content.

OK, Wifred's gone now, he must have it sorted.  :)

I thought I had better be more thorough. My earlier post was out of date so I deleted it.

I changed the setting to icons and that shows the arrow. The suggestion by Muttley to use checkboxes does not work for me. Nor do I see a move topic button anywhere with either setting.

No need to look into this just for me. I haven't needed to move a topic thus far and I don't expect to anytime soon.
Hmmmmm  :-/O

I'm wondering if there's some sort of SMF clash/bug going on ?  :-//

If you check this topic you'll see similar settings are used:

I'm the same and haven't created enough threads to worry about anyway, I've also restored my previous profile settings so as to remove the far right column and minimise clutter, I use the show last post icon on the far right often and that newly implemented column had become another obstacle and hindrance.

We have a couple of posts by members that ordinarily wouldn't have access to the Supporters Lounge (Supporter or 1k+ posts) so let's see if they can follow the tread with their 'Unread Replies'.

lowimpedance and MarkF, did this show in your Unread Replies ?

So, a little test; can we export thread content that was added in the restricted Supporters Lounge and then move to another 'anybody can access' thread.

Moving soon back to be parked in EEVblog Specific, where we started ......unless we need to check something further out.

Thanks all for their participation.  :-+

As a note: Here in Supporters Lounge, instead of a 'Move Topic' arrow in the rightmost column a padlock is shown .....which would suggest that as experienced members we can 'self moderate' our own threads on this board.  :)

Makes sense.

Posts made in the Supporters Lounge will be done with the knowledge that it is in the Supporters Lounge.  Moving it out would be exposing potentially privileged information.

Basically ... whatever happens in the Supporters Lounge, stays in the Supporters Lounge.

So with a big thanks to moderator Simon we've escaped the clutches of the Supporters Lounge to end here gracefully residing in EEVblog Specific.

Thanks to all that came on the short journey around the forum as a result of the Move Topic feature.

Usage guidance edits added to OP.
