How about setting up the rocket sled as part of the narrow joining section?

The simplest arrangement being to just add another piece to the front of the existing section, maybe doubling its width, and build the rocket sled rails parallel to the train tracks.  Would have to move the 'operate trains' time switch back a bit.

Juts a thought.

Looks like you could do with a snake scope, there might be some hidden gems.   :D

If you can spare the space, I'd extend the narrow section where you made your cut so it's longer and then build the rocket sled track there like Brumby suggested. You could even build it so that the new section is an optional module so that the layout can be built like it is now, or with the extra section.

Something like https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17789257/indy.jpg

And if you make the rocket sled, you totally have to make it launch with a button!  ;D
