Trying to find a video
« on: January 21, 2016, 10:51:38 pm »
Hi guys, I'm a long time channel subscriber but new to the forums :)

I'm trying to find a video Dave posted some time back, but I'm very vague on the specifics. I think it was a teardown video (Dave definitely opened the unit), probably of an oscilloscope, which MAY have been an HP. I think it was an older unit, as it was absolutely crammed with PCBs - almost (if not) one for each plane. That's about all I can remember :(

Any help finding the video would be appreciated!

Woohoo, a reply from the man himself :D

I've done some extensive searching but can't find it, the video you linked is one I came across but there aren't enough PCBs and it's too messy. I *think* the one in question had very tidy PCBs on the bottom, left and right sides. I may be horribly wrong about it being an oscilloscope or even HP, I saw it a few months back when I was doing some SERIOUS catching up and watching 2-3 hours of your videos each day.

The more details no matter how small could help us...

Roughly how old did the technology look - was it through-hole, surface mount or a mix of both?

I'd have guessed "EEVblog #790 – Lecroy Wavejet 354 Touch Oscilloscope Teardown" as that thing reminded me of a cubesat  when I saw it, which might fit with your one pcb per plane (assuming you meant 3D plane)?

I was thinking maybe the HP 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyser that has all the frazzed op amps...
Dave, I take it you still have never gone back and tried to fix that puppy?  :)
I'll bet it can be fixed with a full-on op-amp replacement campaign on that board... lol

Or perhaps the HP 1740A if it really was a scope...  Not that many boards, though, but a few.

In addition to drussell's suggestions, perhaps the LeCroy 9384C?

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...
