Bowden-cable power switch in lab gear
« on: February 09, 2022, 08:10:27 pm »
Hi

I vaguely remember a teardown video from a few years ago, in which I've seen this (maybe as part of a mailbag? not sure)...
Some random piece of lab gear was taken apart, unfortunately I do not recall what it was.
As it is tradition, the actual power switch was near the back of the unit, the power button in the front panel.
Though, there was no bent plastic rod, instead a rather elegant bowden cable.

Does anybody here understand what I am talking about?

Apart from a bad choice of category to post this in, what is your question? Yes, I know what you are talking about. But that does not seem to be the point.

The category might have been a bad choice.

Chat relating to specific EEVblog episodes or content.
This seemed somewhat appropriate. Which category would you suggest for this kind of question?

I would appreciate a link to the episode where this cable showed up.
Alternatively, if you have a product name or know where something like that can be purchased, that would help too.
Thank you!

I never saw a bowden cable but I did see some rather interesting mechanisms in a sony stereo, I guess like a planar bowden cable.

I also don't like those plastic push rod switches, if it breaks you cannot turn the equipment off easily. I have had them get popped into the chassis before too. I mean the isolation is nice but you need to make it better, the only danger of a bowden cable is that it has much worse isolation.

Sorry, I seem to have overread the part about the EEV episode. A problem with those actuators seem to be that they are invariably custom parts. ALPS did some switches like that, but you don't see them on offer anywhere. If you are looking for custom made bowden actuators, I have several companies even willing to do small runs, but they are all european.

The problem is, that type of actuator is not what people normally mean when they refer to a "Bowden Cable".

Yes! This is exactly the video I was looking for. Thank you very much.
Now the only question that remains is, where do you go to buy such a contraption.  :)
