The TS80P is the upgrade to the TS80, Dave's previous favorite portable soldering iron. But with added USB-PD and 30W vs 18W.

Aparently the Power bank needs to support 12v @ 3a and 9v @ 3a in order to use its full power. (The manual, is well, normal translated english - Manual v1.1 PDF )

The iron LCD screen itself is displaying P which indicates that it is trying to use PD.

The chinese forums may have a newer firmware, but i cant find it.

The niche for this product must be so small. I had a job where I had to frequently solder in the field, and never found myself lacking an outlet. Electronic equipment is usually plugged into one. Everywhere else we used screw terminals. And this thing certainly doesn't replace a desktop soldering station.  I don't understand why these have such a huge following of people

I don't see why it couldn't replace a desktop soldering station though. At least for most hobbyists. I currently have one of those Chinese Atten hot air/soldering iron combos and I've been looking for an upgrade. I've looked at the TS80 before, but the lack of power wasn't all that appealing and the TS100 just doesn't look all that ergonomic. So this one now looks like a real contender. I mostly solder SMD stuff anyways (rarely anything beefier) and the compact size is perfect for that. Sure I would go for a JBC... but I don't solder enough to warrant that. And the fact that I can take it out of the house and use it on a car or something is just a nice bonus. Unless you have a better option in the up to 150€ price range?

I'd say a hakko 951, or a rip off, is a good option for cheaper, but good, mains station. I did production soldering with their older models as well and they were never something holding you back.

Hakko in Europe is quite expensive from my previous look at it. So a 951 is not all that cheaper than a JBC. In which case I would rather get a JBC. A clone... sure it's cheap... but is it actually better than a TS80P? Both seem like an interesting options, so I am not discarding either.

more than twice the power, good sturdy stand. cool, comfortable handpiece and no tiny fiddly buttons in the grip.
(the old non-'D' station was better IMO. Button interface is stupid)

You should avoid using solder connections in your car anyway.

This thing is an underpowered toy. Doesn't matter if it's SMD, when you have multilayer boards with ground planes and via stitching (just one example).

I did an IC Identification based on screenshots from the video. There were many unknowns with this one, so many chips are marked with the '?' sign when I can't confirm their part number/manufacturer/purpose.

Because it is more expensive than that. And you want to have a holder for it anyway for safely storing it while not in use. And ESD.

Follow-on questions:

1. Does the Ralim custom firmware work with the TS80P and is it recommended? I can't find specifics on the Github notes yet.

2. (Most important): Does the wider hand grip prevent the iron from falling through the Hakko FH-300 stand?

Anyone tried a „PD trigger cable“ like this one with the older TS100?

With the 20V trigger cable the TS100 should deliver 40W if the data on the resistance I found is correct. 60W USB-C Powerbanks are quite bulky but there are also some compact 45W versions out there. Should be okay for this purpose.

I ordered a cable, so in a few weeks I can report here.

Sorry for reviving this topic.I have this soldering iron and im trying to fin a way to fix it.Suddenly it shut down, i tear it down and i can't see any visible obvious defect;

Do you have a clue where I should start ?Thanks!
ps: it draws no power at all, no pd trigger, PD usb tester doesnt even wake up;

If you have a PD USB tester, and it's not powering up either, then there's no voltage coming from your power source.  Try a different cable and adapter.
