Every time you cut the cost of ARM the 8 bit guys can use your old fab to make a smaller, faster 8 bit device on a lot less silicon than the ARM version used, and it will do the job for a lot of things that ARM is overkill for. Think of all those no name 8051 chip clones that are in things like greeting cards, led lights and such, where they use a microprocessor instead of regular jellybean logic gates, simply because the micro will do it, uses the same or less board area ( one package or COB as opposed to 5 SMT packages) and is cheap. Look at Electronupdate, where they put a small cheap mask ROM controller in a sounder to make it beep, simply because the tiny COB can be used in 100 product lines the factory makes with only a different chip, no other change in production methods, and you can make 100 of them before doing a change to the next with almost no gap in production, just remember where you changed the box of dice with Auntie Lo that was picking them out and placing on the dot of epoxy on the riser. 1mm by 1mm chip will do, and cheaper than any ARM core.
