Aternative to Youtube for watching EEVblog?
« on: August 09, 2017, 03:38:35 am »

I'm getting sick and tired of Google's shenanigans (Youtube Heros, demonetization, restricted videos, etc) and was wondering if there was a (official) way to watch EEVblog without using Youtube?

Thanks

Good question.  At some point we need to get serious about rebuilding the old internet...remember that?

Dave did have some videos uploaded to Dailymotion - but I just checked and it seems he hasn't uploaded any since episode #822.

Looks like Dave might have uploaded many of them to Archive.org.  The newest one is #846.

Dailymotion did a mass copy from Youtube, but in pretty shit quality, I wasn't happy with it.

Thinking about writing an app that uploads to all different platforms at once (Youtube, Dailymotion, vid.me, Vimeo, and Facebook (shit video hosting platform by you know).
New ones are also on my RSS podcast feed, hosted by libsyn

I haven't searched for such apps, but I'm fairly sure that something like that must already exist. In that case, might not be worth the effort.

Edit: A quick search finds some tools, but most are premium. If there isn't a good app for this already, and if you decide to write one to fill the void, perhaps consider releasing it?

Last I checked you don't upload things to archive.org. They download from you, if your robots allow them to.

I think that you can upload to them. As I recall, my Podcast years ago I uploaded there. (The Buckeyecast...the early "test" ones are still there) and I did that with software that I downloaded from them. It wouldn't suprise me though, if they have an automatic component to that these days.

How the Rights work on that if they uploaded it directly from YouTube is beyond me... Who would own the Rights...Dave, YouTube, Archive.Org, or Nobody?
The whole "Creative Commons" thing was in its infancy then... No idea now..does anybody know? Copyright Law has not been able to keep up with the technology.

Never go to www.youtube.com, but instead stay logged in and go to:

https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions

If you subscribe to the EEVblog channel, then you'll see what Dave published recently and if it was already watched by you, or not yet.
If you want to see only the videos from a specified channel, you can go to that channel's published videos page:

Hmm, looks like there is actually an upload link now.  When did they add that?  I've never seen it before.

I had a strange experience today.  I started one of the EEVBLOG videos and there was a Tek scope and a voice I recognized as W2AEW  talking about it.  I thought --WHAT??  did you tube show me the wrong video????

Then I realized it was a Tek advertisment....

NBN goes in next week for both my office and lab, once working I'll set a computer up for a few days and mass upload. To Vimeo as well. Anywhere else people would like to see?

Doh, just realised I have 761 videos on Vimeo!
But not the recent ones. I got David2 to take a portable hard drive to his university and spend a few days uploading  ;D
