Low Temp Hot Melt Glue Gun how to increase Heat
« on: August 04, 2015, 10:28:45 am »
Hello

I am trying to recycle plastic polystyrene from model kits

Proof of concept pushed plastic tree pices from the kit into the Low temp hot melt gun.
With a bit of presure startet to melt or elastic in nature.

Low temp Hot melt gun needs more heat.

I have purchased a few of these hot melt guns

I have a Cheap hot melt glue gun have pulled it apart it consists of 240 Volt ac across resistive element to generate heat
Ac power lines run to flat conectors one on one side and the other going to the other side of the resistive element All wrapped up in some kind of like orange Cellophane.

Big Question Can i put two across resistive elements wrapped together in the orange Cellophane will this generate more heat

any ideas

The element is ceramic, its resistance increases as it gets hotter which reduces the current.
So it naturally regulates temperate to the correct level for hot glue.

If you look on the side you may notice the gluegun is 110-240V.  It gets up to temp faster on 240 but 110 gets up to peak temp just the same due to this natural temp regulation.

Fwiw, the "orange cellophane" is probably Kapton tape.

You should be careful when working on projects such as these as melting plastics may generate toxic or carcinogenic fumes and in addition some plastics will combust at given temperatures.

I still have scars from melting toy soldiers as a kid, just another battle I lost.
