Which HP Badge indicates the newer model?

I own HP equipment and also I see used HP equipment online, same model numbers and the same looks but different badges

My own assumption is the monochrome one is newer than the blue as I have 70s gear with the blue

Can anyone shed light on this?

I have HP gear from the 70's through the 90's with badges. The blue and black badge tends to be from the earlier decades and the monochrome one from the later ones. So, yes, the monochrome one is often newer, but there's a significant overlap in the overall chronology (i.e., there doesn't seem to have been a global switch from one badge style to the next). For a particular device model, though, it's probably OK to use the generalization.

Prior to the 70's everything I have has the logo either printed on or etched/engraved/stamped into the panel.

Thanks, Tomorokoshi. Those are very interesting. The May 2000 issue has the most complete summary of design changes.

The horizontal blue/black badge that was used during the 70's and 80's is probably a color version of the 1968 logo. The frame on the badge would match the rule element in the printed logo.

The monochome badge would then be a version of the 1979/1999 logo with its rounded corners.
