Sourcing Obsolete Components
« on: October 16, 2022, 12:36:34 pm »
Hi,

I am trying to get hold of less than 10 of 2N5670 transistor in order to reconstruct a project designed when this transistor was readily available. I appreciate that there are modern day equivalents but I'd really like to use all originally specified components if at all possible.

I have already contacted a few companies who source such components but they have either not got back to me or have not been able to help. I did find some on the internet but after much patience and perseverance have lost my money on that venture.

So I wondered if anybody can recommend how or where I might be able to get hold of these transistors please?

I have heard about fake components from China but have no experience of whether this is a real risk, but any advice on navigating this problem in the search for this transistor would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Andrew

common TO-92 N channel JFET.

Many équivalents, use digikey, Mouser, epay

The N jfets often had a large spread of Idss and gfs and other parameters  within the same part number.
For example I use 2n4416 (nos surplus, NF 2.0 dB ) like that and can adjust Rs if necessary for hobby use...

2N5670:
Looking at data sheet from New Jersey Semi,
It is in a  group had a low noise figure of 2.5 dB compared to the more usual 4dB

it seems there were 3 part numbers splitting Vp and Idss
2n5668, igss 1 to 5 mA; 2n5669, igss 4 to 10 mA; 2n5670, igss 8 to 20 mA;
And Vp went 0.2, 1.0, 2.0  V over those 3 parts.

The above may be of assistance if you decide (reluctantly) to give up search and seek alternative.

Looks like Jotrin has 5 of them.
https://www.jotrin.com/product/parts/2N5670

And 4starelectronics claims to have over 18k in stock.

Then there is littlediode.com...

FWIW we had a recent job for 4-Star (job, not purchase) and they were fine. So they're probably honest. They were slow as hell, but I think someone just forgot about us. We probably could have made it go faster by poking them but uh... we may also have forgotten about the job. That's what happens when it's nowhere near the critical path  :-DD

OK First: I love the typo "epay"! kinda like PayPal. Will use epay now. dislike all the lowercase, then uppercase, and back to lowercase words

Might I suggest JameCo electronics? They often carry older items at a discount. The 2N5670 is not that old..

JameCo also has an epay store which charge no shipping for very small orders

Hi,

Just wanted to say thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Sadly I wasn't able to source the transistor from any of the suggested sources but did find somebody who built the same project and who had some spare transistors left over. They have been kind enough to sell me three.
