14W linear bench power supply
« on: October 08, 2012, 11:27:23 am »
Here is my first project:
A compact linear bench power supply, based on the LM317. Limited to 14V and 1A.
I still have to install a constant current limiter, but am a little unsure of how to do it, considering the lack of space in the enclosure.
The first thing I want to do is to add a small push button on the front plate, to display mA on the same Volt LED display. Then limit the current to 1A with another LM317 in line with a 1 Ohm resistor.
My question is: How would you implement a simple constant current feature in this particular case?

You got a lot in such a small space. You might be able to get enough space to add current limiting if you re-route some of the power wires.  I noticed the wires on the power transformer seem to be crossed and look taught, might want to give some slack on that.  Shorten all the wires to as short as possible and that would free up some space too. One other tip, you have the AC side of the power supply in different parts of the case, generally that isn't a good layout , it is best to keep all the mains stuff in one area so you can keep that isolated.

The lm317 will work for what you need, it just requires a low ohm resistor placed somewhere it can keep cool.

yes, the wiring is a bit of a mess, to say the least. I will shorten and clean that up once the design is finalized.

It's an interesting enclosure and front panel. Where did you pick it up?
