rel function on a fluke 83v
« on: September 15, 2019, 09:29:31 pm »
hi all,may be a daft question but here goes, ive a fluke 83v multimeter,on resistance range if i short the probes together i get a reading of .3 ohm,so far so good,i then hit the rel button to zero it with the probes shorted,it then reads zero, all well and good, trouble is then it wont measure a resistance and the range button does nothing,is this normal or my meter iffy?,cheers m3vuv.

haha. I see you have had no response in 120 days. So, I hope you figured it out. I too recently got hold of a 83V and am seeing some interesting issues. Which I will post here when I have fully discovered them; so that someone else might benefit from it. I have a feeling it could be the meter, lol.

It’s normal. Rel mode in ohms fundamentally has two applications:
1. zeroing out test lead resistance, which only matters for very low resistances. On any higher range it wouldn’t matter in any way.
2. observing resistance change, which is typically within the same range.

I’ll leave you to ponder the ramifications of that. ;)
