Alternative to this SMT connector
« on: June 25, 2024, 12:37:11 am »
Hello,

I have a project which needs an SMT bottom entry receptacle, and the only one found is this one: BH015-05-C-E

I have other similar 5 pin bottom entry receptacles but they are through hole, they work fine for other connectors but this particular one needs to be SMT since the bottom side of the board will touch a ground tab (part of device rf shield).

since the board bottom side touches that grounded tab, it will short if the connector is through hole.

I found this one linked above to be the only one which works for the purpose but it is expensive and no alternative exists... thus I need to find an alternative if possible. It has to be board to board plug in connector.

thanks

I ended up contacting manufacturers in Alibaba and they can make it. I will be waiting for pricing to see if there is a merit of going Alibaba route vs getting the digikey one.

I don't know how you only found one surface mount bottom entry header... there's thousands  of them ... see https://www.digikey.com/short/708d4jf1

instead of inline 5 also consider 2x3 or 2x4 arrangements as they'll also be more reliable, better for surface mount contacts , less chance of bending the header and lifting pads (due to mechanical shocks or other reasons)

yes there are a ton of them but i need 3.96mm pitch which is rare for some reason.

if you filter for 3.96mm and surface mount you find only 3 parts all of which are the same company, one of them is the part i listed.

alibaba supplier was good in contact and agreed to send the samples. the unit price for my quantity is just 0.185$ which cannot be beaten. this thing is a PSU which will connect to a board, 2 amps max so there should be no wear and tear or danger of any kind.

i actually once got a similar connector from another similar chinese company (CJT) for the same purpose but that one was through hole for my product (thunderpsu for dreamcst) and it was good and reliable.

i also looked into lcsc as usual but found nothing. all parts are "pre-order" with prices even higher than digikey.

the currently sampled part from china is exact same as the one from digikey so i will set the digikey one as alternative.
