PC restarts after shutting down
« on: September 23, 2024, 06:53:07 pm »
Hi all,

I have an issue related to an industrial tablet PC with Windows 8.1 installed. This PC keeps restarting by itself after approximately 10 seconds of shutting down when the power supply is not connected (when it is running on the battery). Replacing its SSD with a new one having Windows 8 fresh installed (to figure out whether the fault is OS related) didn’t help.

Have any of you guys encountered such an issue?

Yeah, if it's that old, you got a bad battery.

Disable "wake-on-LAN" and/or "magic-packets".

Thank you for your swift replies..

No, the Computer isn’t that old, it runs more than 3 hours on battery power; however, to find out whether the issue is battery related, I did remove one battery at a time and reverified (It has two identical removable batteries and It works even if one of them is not installed) but it kept restarting. Considering that it is infrequent that the two batteries will go bad at the same time, we may assume that the two batteries are good.

Wake-on-LAN wasn’t actually enabled.

Do you have a keyboard and/or mouse connected?  Check to see if they're allowed to wake the computer.  I've always found that allowing the mouse to wake the computer causes more trouble than it's worth.  Try disabling absolutely 'wake the computer' on everything.  There are many things that can do that.

Go into Windows event viewer.  If it's software related you will find a message somewhere in there.

Also try going into BOIS and disable some of the lower "C" states.  I've seen this cause some similar.

I think the CMOS battery is drained. Something similar has occurred before.

Check rue BIOS for an auto start option. Server and industrial hardware is often designed to be always running and have such an option.

I'll take a stab in the dark and it could be an issue with the motherboard.

Thank you, everyone.

Nevertheless, I tried almost everything you suggested; the IPC is still restarting.

I do believe that there is an issue with the motherboard as

Bryn has mentioned.

How I know it could be the motherboard because I had a similar issue 16 years ago, only that was caused by years of dust build-up inside my computer tower, and it caused that side effect as a result (same with constant thermal shutdowns).

Hope you get the issue sorted though.

To rule out the OS or it being a software problem, boot it into Linux.

Check the power switch circuitry for moisture that may be creating a leakage path.
