How to simulate ATF22V10CZ PAL ?
« on: January 18, 2011, 07:27:06 pm »
Hi ya!

I've recently been assigned a school project wich involves using an ATF22V10CZ PAL programmed as an Arithmetic and Logic Unit.

I've done it already, but we needed to test it physicaly after all the theory. My question is: If it isn't possible to test the programm physicaly in a test set, is it be possible to simulate the process? If so, with which software? I have Orcad PSPICE, LogiSim, LTSpiceIV, CircuitMaker2000 and MultiSim, but I couldn't find the ATF22V10CZ PAL in any of them.

Thanks in advance and my best regards to everyone!

It's funny that you mention this as I am currently doing some work with these. Go to the Atmel website and download "WinCUPL", it's a CUPL compiler and has a functional simulator which allows you to do what you want.

Hi David!
Thank you for the reply!

I am using WinCUPL already to program the PAL, problem is the simulator is not very user friendly and I need to do some simulations now and then.  I would like to have something like multisim where it would work with the simulated PAL with the code I inserted in it. Seems like no one simulates those as I can't see anything on the web.

Unfortunately no one really supports CUPL/ABEL now as it is superceded by VHDL and Verilog. Saying that, I think Protel 99SE might allow you to compile and simulate it...

Thank you very much for the support Mr. David !

I'll do more research but I'm forced to believe that I won't have success. Is just for example, if I want to debug my code, I have to do it by hand on paper or burn the PAL and test it. It's not very practical/fast and to burn it I'm required to be in the lab where the equipment is.

Best regards,

dont give any excuse, this is your opportunity to practice deep thinking. meticulously and progressively process on getting to know your code bit by bit, line by line. try to burn it in your brain, and think how its going to run, record every parameters every registers and variables on paper, if you have 1000 iterations in your loop, then 1000 records it is. take your opportunity in your lab to take any glitches into mind and when getting back to your cave, think every possible way why its not running correctly. and if there is hardware feedback into your code, try to simulate the condition and predict what the code will get and process, in time. i believe that will make you a better programmer... coding with minimal interference to electricity. my 2cnts rambling ;)

ps: if my codes getting out of control, i'll print it, find a secluded place, start ticking every line, and sometime... "dance with the wind" ;D

Ahahah Mr. shafri!

Very true and agreed. I do plan everything before starting to code. Then do my code with as much detail as possible, and then burn it. But my question to you is:
 - You see you took 2 hours to write the code.
 - Then you're required to show it running to your teacher.
 - After running it, you have an error.
 - You're given 1 hour to solve the problem whatever it is.
 - Wouldn't you think about a faster way of testing the code besides reviewing it on paper?

Best regards gentlemen,

Hi again everyone!

I finally got the software to simulate this properly.  It's called ISIS and is part of Proteus software pack from: http://www.labcenter.com/index.cfm

Thought I should put the info here since the problem is solved and there might be someone else with the same problem.

Thanks again everyone!

Best regards gentlemen,
