potentiometer voltage limit

is there a limit on how much voltage you can put through a pot if so how do i calculate it

It’s not something you calculate. You look it up in the datasheet.

The maximum voltage across a potentiometer is normally limited by the power rating of the potentiometer, which should be quoted.  A 1.0k, 1/2W unit would be limited to 22 V, preferably derated to less than 15 V for a 2:1 power safety factor.
Where things get tricky is if you are using it as a variable resistor, where the power for a given voltage varies with the change in resistance.
By definition, a potentiometer is used as a voltage divider, but there may be current passing through the wiper.

problem with data sheets is coming from amazon they tend to have very little info

Well, it’s not wise to use no-name components for anything involving higher voltages.

If amazon has a part number, google it with “datasheet”.

But also consider moving away from Amazon for electronic components — they tend to not be especially good prices.

would tend to agree having seen one go up in smoke only advantage with amazon is i can pick delivery day
