Electronic Magazines selection
« on: August 15, 2015, 07:46:49 pm »
Hi,

My name Ala'a and this is my first post.

I'd like to get advice on which magazine are good to subscribe to?

I looking more for a focus on tips and tricks, rather than a focus on popular Kits. If possible a balance between new info and tips-N-tricks (new and old) for Electronics professionals and hobbyist.

I tried to search with my limited knowledge the net, and found the followings:

http://www.elektor.com/magazines/

http://www.siliconchip.com.au/

http://www.epemag3.com/

http://circuitcellar.com/

http://store.nutsvolts.com/home.php

I do not know if there are any other ones, and probably had missed better ones.

Thanks in advance for the help

P.S: I live in UAE (Middle East).

I'm surprised these magazines are still going what with the internet and all. Then again, the top shelf mags are still in business despite the internet - probably not in UAE though  :palm:

Of those I remember Elektor and Everyday, Practical Electronics were favourites to me back in the 80's. Elektor being more high brow, the others with free PCB's and/or components now and then for pocket money.

They are only still in business because of the ridiculous ad prices they still charge, as if they are still only game in now  ::)

And the old-schol advertising people still at companies who think these prices are still good value and/or think they have to tick every advertising platform for these Key Performance Indicator metric each month, so they continue to pay it ::)

As an indicator, those CPM figures are about 40 times what I charge!

It's bloody stupid. I reckon Rigol have doubled their sales of DP832 and DS1054Z's purely from your reviews alone Dave! (Including the bad ones calling them out). I honestly thought these magazines went extinct decades ago. That they can charge so much for ad copy?

Mind you, I used to work in the motorcycle aftermarket parts biz and the advertised rates bore no relation to the actual rates negotiated with the mags. But the cheeky buggers would sometimes be left with space and phone up within hours of a printing deadline trying to sell a quarter page for peanuts. We would go for it so long as we got to approve copy (by fax in those days) but they would knock up some really cruddy advert that was probably more detrimental to business and publish without our say so and have the cheek to invoice full whack!  |O :-DD

Haha, sarcasm, I like it. But yeah like I said I remember some of those mags from the 1980's. No idea what they are like now, and really, you just need to buy one copy of each and see what you like.

Hint: The advertising talk could actually benefit you. Mags very often give subscriptions away for free/next to nothing just so they can have their audited ABC figures bumped up to lure in advertisers. The other thing they do is if you present yourself as a potential advertiser they will send you copies of their publications for free... A bit like requesting free samples from the electronics component manufacturers...  ;)
