Not sure what's wrong with your Falstad circuit... this one seems to work better:

The AC signal generator in my simulation was wired "backwards" with the "positive" side to GND, I switched that around and it responded like yours. Thanks for pointing that out. I do love simulators for their ability to let me play and learn without blowing up parts, but they do have their limits.
