Looking for wired+wireless mesh network
« on: October 10, 2018, 06:10:42 pm »
Hi All!

Trying to expand a project, and looking for how to do communication...

I would like to use a both wires and wireless links to connect many Slaves to a Master for a project. I was thinking about 802.15.4, Zigbee or similar, but that is wireless only. I would like to be able to connect slaves with wires when possible and use wireless hops when not possible. Does anyone know of some existing solution/communication protocol that does this. I would like it to not require any user interaction to change between wire and wireless, I would like it to mesh over whatever exists.

Aiming for cables max length of 1000m (thinking RS485 style) and wireless hops of max 1000-3000m. Low speed requirements. About max 50 kbits/s.

Any ideas?

Take a look on CAN bus. They are used on PLC in industries and cars to read from many sensors and control many actuators in a master slave configuration.

Switching between wireless and wired transparently I can only think of Ethernet 802.3 with is the way Internet it's connected.

Thanks, I have been considering CAN for the wired bus but any mesh solution would be more nice.
