Banana to binding post adapter
« on: June 22, 2024, 06:06:33 am »
Looking for something like the pic below. Thought they'd be standard issue on ali- but can't find any on there.  Hard to find on other sites and those I can want >$!3 USD each?@ Is this something that unusual or am I not using the correct search term(s)?

Many parts suppliers have them
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/pomona-electronics/1286/745043
but expect to pay $18 > 80 for anything that is not made out of recycled beer cans

this seems to work a little better   " binding post banana adapter "

well you get benefits from pomona. I noticed the off brand ones really warp like crazy from heat or solvents and they could crack and of course things like leaf springs have much less fatigue life from china. For clone battery holders I noticed a 300% less fatigue life on chinese parts vs the "overpriced" western part. Then there is also the plating quality and electrical properties.

also the chinese one will likely crack the terminal thumb screw faster. AND the bore is less likely to be correct size lol (use pin gauges)

I would just get it from digikey, its a great investment. For banana stuff, I don't think your actually getting a good deal from china, because quality is important. its very deceptive

bore size out of spec happens BTW, even for western parts. For keysight I did a test and I found 1% defect rate on a sample of about 100 connectors on equipment. Maybe its alot less but I ran into it. Don't think its worn out either, just wrong. A few thou is all you need for loose connection with certain banana connectors.

I think you just have unrealistic expectations about what a decently made product should cost.

While binding post adapters like this are useful, FYI what I find arguably more useful are the spring-loaded banana plugs like WAGO 215. They cost a few bucks apiece but are suuuuuper convenient and endlessly reusable. I often use them to lash up temporary custom test leads; if I find it’s something I use a lot, then I’ll make a permanent version using real banana plugs (screw or solder).

If you don't need to carry much current you can use: banana->bnc + bnc->banana. Maybe you already have these but cheap ones often have high contact resistance.

These are similar to what you want but you have to buy 8pcs:

If you need only a banana to wire adapter you can try these (but you need a screw driver every time):

I use a lot WAGO 215 adapters. They are good and not too expensive.

Thank you for all the replies.

My variac has only (female) banana plugs out and I wanted the adapter so I could connect bare wires up to it if I needed to w/o much fuss. I did come across that other style you linked to, Tiziano, that you need a screwdriver to adjust, but binding posts that have plastic insulated knobs would also be desirable, so those might not be best. The idea of frankenstein-ing 2 BNC adapters together did cross my mind, but I'm not too keen about that long thing hanging off my variac.

Considering the binding post --> BNC adapters aren't much different than what I'm looking for and are something like 99 cents each on aliexpress, I don't think I have unrealistic expectations to not pay $13 each, Tooki. As usual, I'll have to either wait until the Chinese copy it or just buy regular binding posts and solder a banana male to the backside of it.

Thanks again,

hell no get a real one for a variac thats current.

the cheap bnc adapters are shit too. take one apart if you want to know exactly what I mean. its very unrealistic lol

the plating quality alone is a good enough reason, but everything is valid. I think their alloys and tempers are all wrong.
