Installing an HDMI Port in an iPad Air
« on: August 03, 2015, 08:47:06 am »
I've been wondering if installing an HDMI Port in an iPad Air would be a reasonably doable thing for a beginner like myself... An issue I already see is that the outer frame would not be able to fit the size of the HDMI port... So perhaps a Mini-HDMI would be doable. Although - the HDMI port would be ideal. I realize there is an adapter for this purpose... But a port for the HDMI itself would be pretty handy. I'll work around the casing issue if this is doable.

If this is a doable thing for a beginner like myself - what all will I need to do? For future reference - how can I "modify" already built boards? This is a kind of off topic question but also relevant. I'm quite confused on how to modify boards that have already been designed - especially in regards to adding components to them. Is this a doable thing?

I've never worked on apple devices but I would guess like most tablets and phones they have very little if any empty space.

Below is a link to the innards of the lightning to HDMI adapter apple sell

Clearly not as simple as mounting the connector somewhere and running bodge wires to it, you could buy the adapter and hack it into the case assuming you find space, but at that point you have bought the adapter... lol

That's the funniest thing I've heard since "a series of tubes".
No, such modifications are not possible unless you can reverse engineer the hardware.

Yes you can probably fit the connector to the case somehow, but the biggest question is what are you going to connect it to? I highly doubt they will have unpopulated pads on the mainboard for HDMI out...
