Help with usb-c to 6pin 0.5mm ffc
« on: June 28, 2024, 05:28:31 pm »
Hi guys,

I have a 6-pin ffc cable (AWM20624_0.5) and i need it to feed it to this pinch (https://shorturl.at/8dvDy) (image below) and then convert it to a usb-c so I can plug it to a usb-c port. This is for a small arcade tv which is connected as an accessory to a keyboard and it powers it and sends a gif to display. I know that 6-pin is only for power but it worked before and it has a 6 pin so who i am to judge. The probem is that the connector broke so i need to find or make another one. Here is the broken connector https://imgur.com/a/type-c-to-board-via-ffc-6-pin-ribbon-7IUXajD . Here is the accessory https://epomaker.com/products/rt100-smart-mini-display?_pos=2&_psq=rt1&_ss=e&_v=1.0 . I need something like this https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32869079146.html but with the pinch i mentioned. If anyone knows anything, I would be grateful.
Thanks in advance, Nik

"I know that 6-pin is only for power" not sure what you mean, but its power and data I would think.

If you had the soldering skills, buy a new type C connector, glue/solder it in place, and run some mod wires to fix the PCB break. But, considering you are asking, seems unlikely.
Buy another $16 unit, and glue or reinforce it so it doesn't break again.

I read that post:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/are-there-6-pin-usb-c-sockets-with-d-d-lines-instead-of-cc1-and-cc2/

So there isn't any OEM option. I should get a pinch and a port separately and solder it myself. The pinch has 6 pins. Does the port need to have exactly 6 or get an 8,16 whatever and not touch the unnecessary ones?

I tried to fix it but the metal contacts of the port where destroyed and got deep hidden inside the plastic and the contacts of the PCB were teared off so I had to do some digging to find the trays or connect them with wires to the pinch. Also I thought I could find easily a replacement and didn't bother with the board and discarded it. I could have got a new port and bypass the PCB with wires but I didn't thought of that at that time. Also if I recall correctly the port had more than 6 pins so not every pin was used by the pinch or some were shorted together I don't know. My main problem right now is what port I should get. I think If I managed to solder them it will be way cheaper than ordering a new accessory. Thanks for the insight!

The port maybe be using anywhere from 4 to 6 pins, since the FFC is 6 pin.
If its 4pin then you'd have Tx, Rx, 5V, and Gnd. But it may be using the pins unconventionally, without reverse engineering the board I'm not sure.

You could trace the FFC pins on the board you still have and see if all are used. If only 4 are used then its fairly clear what to connect where. You'd either buy a typec male connector, or one thats presoldered onto an adapter board.
But its going to be wayyyy more hassle and time than its worth.
