new to esr readings
« on: June 08, 2014, 09:51:17 pm »
I just got an ESR meter a few days ago and I have an old hi fi amp
where the smoothing caps have leaked and made a big mess over the board

my ESR meter reads 9973 uF @ 0.06 ESR
the peak-atlas chart says it should be around 0.01 ESR
Is that a large enough difference between readings
to ascertain the cap's are faulty  ?

No, it's ok. A smoothing cap for 100Hz doesn't need to be a low ESR type anyway. If the value is within an order of magnitude that's fine for a standard cap. But when it's much larger I'd replace the cap.

No.

But the caps having spilled their guts is a perfect indication that you should replace 'em. I would have thought that to be somewhat obvious? ;-)

Yep I realise they need to be replaced  :-+

I am having problems finding replacements though.

Hi, ESR values seem ok for an old cap of that 10.000uF, but if there is clear sign of leakage the change is necessary. But sometimes the old glue used for mechanical rigidity gets all brown and looks like electrolyte.

Looks more like glue that "spilled guts", value and esr readings don't compute with "spilled guts" either.
