Once that LED display is soldered in, you've poured the cement and cannot access solder joints underneath it. Good you got it working.

A different chinese clock kit that was showing "NSNS" except when setting the time.

Thanks for that information. Pretty much same circuit and error caused by Clock Stopped issue.
