Unless tips are really really crap, they are copper underneath the plating.

Tinned surface must be magnetic because it is made from iron, the rest of it may be magnetic as well as it may have a bit of iron layer as well. This is how good quality tip is made:Yeah,a magnet sticks to it pretty good,so i'm guessing full steel.

I have a set of copper tips (not plated), which I've got just to try. And I don't see a substantial difference in performance compared to the regular tips. But they do work, which is frankly, more than I expected from them
