Are there any advantages of having copper tips on a cheapo soldering iron?i guess that they conduct heat better

Unless tips are really really crap, they are copper underneath the plating.

I have a set of copper tips (not plated), which I've got just to try. And I don't see a substantial difference in performance compared to the regular tips.

But they do work, which is frankly, more than I expected from them

Are what, magnetic? Tinned surface must be magnetic because it is made from iron, the rest of it may be magnetic as well as it may have a bit of iron layer as well. This is how good quality tip is made:

Yeah,a magnet sticks to it pretty good,so i'm guessing full steel.

Pure copper works perfectly well IME, they just erode quickly without the protective plating.

Pure copper works perfectly well IME, they just erode quickly without the protective plating.

Exposed copper won't last even hour of soldering without significantly eroding. And if you solder lead-free they'll basically dissolve in solder in front of your eyes.
