Commodore Amiga 2000 power supply RIFA capacitor value?
« on: July 18, 2024, 05:27:06 pm »
Hi all,

I heard the all too familiar "pop" sound whilst using my A2000 today followed by that dreadful pungent aroma...upon further inspection, I discovered a RIFA capacitor in a very sorry state. From what remains, I can see the lettering "RIFA PME 271 M"...the problem is, I can't see a value.

I can't find any schematics that I could use to determine it's value, so my question is, what value capacitor should I replace it with? I do have some TENTA 0.1uF 40/100/21...

Thanks!

If it was placed across mains then accurate value doesn't matter, so you may use a cap of a similar size.

This a known problem called "RIFA madness" - this style of RIFA cap absorbs moisture, swells and then explodes - it uses a paper dielectric.  If you see any in equipment replace them before this happens!
