Complete Newb Here. Signal to sound.
« on: December 19, 2021, 01:50:06 pm »
My field is laser research, I need to be able to create a stable audio frequency.
Can I do it with a signal generator and a speaker ?
Or what is the cheapest way to do so ?
 Thanks in advance.

That's rather vague. Yes a signal generator connected to a speaker will make a sound. You would be best to use an amplifier in between though. Given your field of research you seem to be asking something rather obvious.

It depends on what stability level you're needs.

In order to generate stable frequency you're needs to use signal generator clocked from OCXO (Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator).

If 1-2 ppm is acceptable stability level for your needs, you can use TCXO (Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator), it has lower power consumption, more cheap and goes into working mode much faster than OCXO, but TCXO has higher phase noise than OCXO.

So, your choice will depends on your requirements.

I'm guessing you want a fixed pitch.
Do you need a pure tone? ie no harmonics.
Do you want constant amplitude?

I'd buy a cheap generator that has some precision eg FG-100 DDS Function Signal Generator Frequency Counter 1Hz - 500KHz from Aliexpress.

Or use your computer with some freeware https://listoffreeware.com/best-free-signal-generator-software-windows/
