Buying my first scope: Hantek dso2d15 vs Rigol DS1052e
« on: July 16, 2023, 05:52:01 pm »
I'm buying an oscilloscope for my hobby projects, and I currently have these two options on the table that satisfy my needs:

Hantek DSO2d15

150 MHz bandwidth
signal generator
frequent firmware updates, PC app, so I can hook it to my PC, if I want to
Buggy firmware
big screen
8M memory depth

RIGOL DS1052E

50 MHz
"Rock-solid ... scope" (c) EEVBlog
Quite old

Which one would you suggest I buy?

Hantek DSO2d15

...

RIGOL DS1052E

...

What price range are you looking at?  Rigol Clearance has the DS1102Z-E for $223 right now (vs. $280 regular non-clearance price).

100 MHz
2 channels
24/12 Mpts memory vs 16/8 on the DS1052E (though the DS1052E has a "long" memory mode whatever that is)
more trigger types than the DS1052E
protocol trigger/decode support
larger display (7 inch vs 5.6 inch)

As for the Hantek, there's a huge thread (among several threads here) discussing problems, hacks, and firmware fixes for the DSO2x1x series that you should look over before buying it: New Hantek DSO2X1X models?

I would always take Rigol over Hantek considering the specs were even remotely comparable unless the deal was just too good. Rigol quality is typically far better than Hantek. Personally I'd choose Siglent over either.

Get the 1054z from Rigol.  They either come unlocked or you can "hack" it to a 100MHz.  Rigol themselves don't care and started selling it that way for the same price.

I purchased the Hantek DSO2D15. It worked out of the box. I have not upgraded the firmware yet. I have only used it on a couple of projects so far and they weren't very demanding. I have not seen any problems. Are they hiding in there? Who knows?

The only thing I would warn anyone about is that some suppliers ship it with 100 MHz probes. I purchased two 200 MHz probes so I can get the full benefit of it's bandwidth.

And if you look REAL close at an analog signal,
You will find that it has discrete steps.

I'm buying an oscilloscope for my hobby projects

It depends on the kind of "hobby projects" you have in mind. I find a 4 channel scope very useful at times and the DS1054Z can be hacked to 100 MHz, it will display reasonably well when hacked to well over 100 MHz, from memory it still is OK at 150 MHz. My 1054Z has been fault free since buying it several years ago and while an old model now, it still works fine for my hobby use and is small enough and light enough for my needs.

For higher frequency use, I have a TinySA Ultra spectrum analyser/signal generator and a home made high impedance probe. The probe works to 1 GHz and the SA goes to beyond 5 GHz. Quite amazing if you need RF test gear at around $150.

Haven't followed the Hantek thread closely, but I seem to remember
that many have reported that the 2C10 can be hacked into a 2D15.

Here is a comparison between two other models of Hantek and Rigol: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/hantek-dso5102-vs-rigol-ds1102-vs-rigol-ds1054/

One thing about that is the signal generator: apparently some the 2C1x models have the generator hardware  (but not activated), but some don't.  So there's a risk that if you hack your 2C10 to a 2D15, you'll end up with a 2C15 if there's no generator hardware.

From these, I would suggest to buy Siglent SDS1202X-E :)
