I need to learn SolidWorks 2020
« on: December 12, 2020, 01:41:51 pm »
hi
I have never done anything similar in the past, but it's time to move up and learn something new.
Yesterday I purchased the "basic" license for SolidWorks 2020, and installed it. I don't have the license for the PCM-module, and frankly I don't know if it's useful for me.

Anyway, I have zero skills with SolidWorks and similar, and need to learn from scratch.

Any recommendations? Books or video?

There are a lot of great videos on Youtube. I'm not entirely sure they're suited to learn from scratch, but I suspect it's doable. They're great for "I need X and am not sure how to do it" though. My main advice would be to keep going at it. Learn its quirks and niggles. It can be a frustrating experience but once you start becoming a bit fluent it's a lot of fun.

thank you!  :D

I have to design and 3D print things like this

So I will practice a lot with.

I'd recommend developing a firm grasp of sketches, relations and constraints first. Without understanding the 2D part dealing with the 3D part becomes much more challenging. Revising a sketch later in the process can be a nightmare when it's not decently draw, while updating previous decisions is why parametric applications like Solidworks can be so powerful.

I would recommend books by SDC Publications.  I used their materials while learning SolidWorks (AutoCad and AutoDesk Inventor as well).

Learning SolidWorks 2020 -- ISBN: 978-1-63057-308-9

Parametric Modeling with SolidWorks 2020 -- ISBN: 978-1-63057-313-3

Even though the books are not super cheap, taking into consideration SW 2020 is "last years" model, you should be able to get the books from an online used book seller for a fraction of the price of a new book.

Practice Practice Practice.

Designing mechanical parts in software like Solidworks has several different layers to the process. In time you will learn the interface, the tools, and then the design strategy will come in time. With practice you will learn to think 10 steps ahead after you become familiar with the tools so you know how to make your life easy when you need to make revisions / changes to dimensions at the beginning of your feature tree.

Go on YouTube and follow tutorials to build random objects. You can probably even find old official solidworks training courses floating around out there.

Solid works has a great built in tutorial in the help menu. I taught myself from scratch using it.
