BLUETOOTH HANDS FREE IN CAR.
« on: November 21, 2016, 10:14:39 pm »
EDIT STARTS HERE....

THIS IS A POST I PUT UP A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.
I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE RESPONSE I GOT FROM SEVERAL CONTRIBUTORS.
SUGGESTING

Quote
Or buy a 3G/4G modem and plug it in a RPi board, then configure the RPi as a 3G/4G to WiFi bridge and use it to provide WIFi connection to your phone. Set IPTABLES properly to block unintended connections.

OR

Quote
OK, so the solution is this:
You take the Android junk, and throw it to the trash can, where all android junk belongs.
You buy a windows phone. All your problems are gone.

THESE ARE NOT HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS AND ONLY GOES TO SHOW THE LEVEL OF MENTALITY OF SOME PEOPLE THAT THINK THEY ARE INTELLEGENT.

ORIGINAL POST STARTS HERE...

Good morning all,

A bit of a change from my usual posts.

I have had a problem for about a year and it's bugging me.
I use my phone as a PHONE when I am out of the house. Data turned off at all times.

My car has Bluetooth Phone connection.
My old phone (A SONY EXPERIA) was able to dial out OK.
By pressing the phone button on the steering wheel and waiting for the instruction "SPEAK NOW"
I would say something like "CALL HOME".
After a couple of seconds the dial tone could be heard through the radio speakers.
The call would be answered and I would be able to talk.
That's the way it should be.

That was until I replaced the phone with a SAMSUNG GALAXY CORE PRIME.
I am still able to receive calls but to make a call I have to make the call manually, either by dialing or using speed dial.
I either have to pull over or get a passenger to dial the phone for me.
If I press the button on the steering wheel I get the message "DATA NOT ACTIVE" or something like that

I broke the phone in and accident and had to replace it.
The new phone is a ZTE Blade Q lux Telstra special.  Now UNLOCKED.
The new phone also has the same problem..
I have even tried my daughters SAMSUNG S5 I think it is. That also didn't work.

Why would a phone need to have data turned on to use Bluetooth in the car.

BTW. The old SONY EXPERIA still works fine in the car.

I have spoken to three SO CALLED Mobile / Cell Phone specialists in three shops, and they all say that the Bluetooth system in the car is faulty.
They have no explanation when I tell them the the SONY still works fine.

Has anyone else had this problem.

I await any help I can get

BILL.

Good morning Monkeh

Having data turned on would allow me to use the internet while away from my WIFI system
But I don't like those B----Y popup Ads trying to download something or other or reminding me that My Phone is out of date at 2 months old'
when I'm playing Solitare or Mahjong during my dinner break at work.
As far as I'm concerned to make a phone call in my car should not need to or even try to use the internet.
That's why I have data turned off.

There is nothing in the manuals for any of the phones in question about needing data on to use the Bluetooth Dialler.

All the voice control stuff is now down with centralized processing so you sort of need to have data on for it to respond. Downside, you need data turned on. Upside, it responds to more than just a couple of simple phrases.

You should be able to adjust notification settings to limit how much junk you see in other apps while data is turned on, at least you can in IOS. Android should be able to do the same sort of thing.

Someone said to me a while ago that if I turn off location then the phone / car what ever is doing it won't try to use data.
I had forgotten about it until I started this post and got the first reply from Monkeh.

I have to go to the doctor this afternoon so I will try it then.

Data turned on but Location turned off.

thanks
BILL.

Turn data on. It won't end the world.
It could be very expensive though, if your contract doesn't include data.

I've been stung by this before. I'm on a direct debit pay as you go contract, with no monthly subscription, free calls to landlines and texts, but if any data is used, it's a flat rate charge of £2 per day! And guess what? Muggins here, forgot to disable data and ran up a huge bill. If I needed bluetooth hands free, then a phone which needs data to be enable it, would be a deal breaker for me.

2 quid per day?
That's a bit steep.
I am on a pay as you go plan with no data.
This is the reason I don't want to use Data.
My contract is, pay $30 or $15 and use the phone until it is near expired the top it up again (We call it RECHARGE).
I am notified when my credit is about 2/3  used up then again when I have about $5 left.
To Take a plan that includes data is a bit more expensive however I could use data if I watch what I'm doing and don't use too much. (Edited typo)
With TELSTRA Australia you get charged the earth just to receive a voice message.
One I had cost me $4.80.
Rip Off

Thanks for your comments

All the voice control stuff is now down with centralized processing so you sort of need to have data on for it to respond.
This could be tested by trying it with data off while connected to the internet via wifi.

Other option: Try a different app for the voice control.

Yes.
The car is able to Communicate with the phone via Blutooth using the WiFi when parked in the driveway with data turned off.

If You take another look at the first post in this feed.
I can only make a call if I stop the car to dial or get a passenger to dial for me.

Is there any other ANDROID APP I could try using to do the dialling for me.

Probably.
You'll have to look in the app store for stuff like 'voice control', 'voice dialing', 'handsfree dialing' or similar terms.

Some builds have speech to text as a built in option. I'm not sure if it works for dialing, but it might be worth trying this

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
MatthewEveritt, I have done the modified settings you suggested.
I will try it out on the way to work about 2:00 this afternoon.
I will post the results tomorrow around 9:30 tomorrow morning.

I scrolled through the ANDROID LOLLYPOP user manual but couldn't find anything on Bluetooth / Hands free setup.
Thanks for your help

BILL.
